Jayco Jay Feather rear bumper replacement

Getting ready to pull the trigger on the rear bumper replacement and wanted input on the size and style of the new unit. Wondering about whether to put a stock on back on with an under bumper hitch unit...or has anyone had better luck putting on a thicker steel bumper and welding the hitch right to that. We want to be able to attach a bike carrier or a rack to carry extra gear/firewood on the rear of the unit. Thanks everyone for your input :-)

What is the bumper rated for? I've heard a few stories where the dynamic weight of bikes out away from the bumper caused failures. You may wish to research a little for the best method to mount.

What is wrong with the existing bumper?

For adding a bike rack, have a local welding shop add a custom hitch. They will add a few stiffing plates to the chassis.

There is nothing wrong with the existing bumper. It works fine for the job it has from the factory. When it is asked to do more there *may* be a problem. Some bumpers are rated for very little extra weight. Then place the weight out away from the bumper with a bike carrier and the weight acts like a lever especially when bouncing down the road.

Sometimes a spare tire carrier and spare tire take most of the capacity. Just something to think about before making a modification.

Many people add them without a problem, but some have issues.

Look at the products made by Mount-N-Lock . They make some brackets that reinforce where the bumper is welded to the frame. Etrailer has them. They also make some specialty cargo carrier racks etc.
I've been researching/thinking beefing up our bumper to carry a generator. The receiver hitch that bolts/welds to frame & a HF cargo carrier is looking like easiest/least $ . I want to keep 1ac on while traveling in our hot summers.

I am wanting to mount a carrier to tote my two small inverter generators. Which hitch are you looking at?

Hi Taft, I thought that's what I was doing here. Might need to go another direction and just put the stock one back on and put the bikes inside.

I'm looking at the Curt hitch etrailer sales. I haven't looked at the one camping world sales . We have one close enough to just go pick it up.
