Hello! I am thinking of swapping the third AC unit in our 2021 Jayco seismic to a heat pump. I understand that this will have to have its own thermo. Any recommendations or tips/tricks on this project? Hoping to do it before January and a long trip to Disney. Thank you!

I’m curious to know what you expect to gain by replacing your current A/C unit with a heat pump. Any electric savings is realized only when a heat pump is used for heating. In A/C mode, there’s really no appreciable electric savings at all because both A/C units and heat pumps work using the same principles.

If you’re paying a nightly rate for electricity, it’s the campground who will reap any savings, unless you’re on a meter and paying for the amount of electricity actually being used.

Note that an RV heat pump shuts down and switches to resistance heat when the outdoor temperature gets around 40 degrees and below. Also, the amount of heat a heat pump produces becomes less as the outdoor temperature drops.

If the A/C you’re considering to replace is healthy, I’d pass on swapping it out for a heat pump. Based on the costs of purchasing, installing and factoring in the savings on electricity, if any, your ROI will be quite lengthy.

ditto. I just put a small oil filled heater in the garage space on low-ish setting. works very well, even in temps into the 30's. Plus it is quiet, no big fan running.

Seems like a lot of effort for seemingly little return.

Thank you for the replies! My main reason for wanting to swap the units is obviously for a heating component in the garage. With propane prices rising, and considering an average sized RV burns 1/3 gallon an hour running continuously, I figured this would be a pliable option as electricity is free at all campgrounds we utilize unless purchasing a monthly/season site which we rarely do. In addition, I appreciated the idea of a dual thermostat simply because my kids/guest who stay in the garage portion tend to like it much warmer than I do in rest of the camper. I did purchase and use a small electric space heater in the garage during a trip to Disney earlier this year when a crazy cold front it. It didn’t perform quite as well as I would have hoped but maybe it was too much on the smaller end. I definitely appreciate your feedback, you’ve surely given me things to consider.

I have two of these for winter usage - heater - one in the garage, one in the main living area. Keeps it very comfortable on low/med settings. Generally have the thermostat set at ~68-70 degrees on the heaters. I have the RV furnace set at 64. While on a 3 week trip where the avg nightly temp was in the low to mid 40's, the furnace would run a few times from midnight-ish though dawn.

That said, mine is a 4113, so somewhat different floorplan, but performance should be similar.
