Jayco Warranty and Water Infiltration

When I picked my TT up Saturday from the Jayco dealer (had some warranty work done) the service manager went over roof care and sealant maintenance. He explained that you need to look for cracks in the sealant, and if you see 'em it's time to reseal.

I mentioned that I figured that during the first two years, in the warranty period, that any leaks and damage from leaks would be covered repairs. What he told me totally caught me off guard.

He said that any damage from leaks from cracked seals are NOT covered under the Jayco warranty. The responsibility to keep the sealants in good condition is considered owner maintenance by Jayco, and not a part of the 2 year warranty coverage plan.

Have any of you heard that?

Yep. Its in the warranty that you have to maintain the seals. These warranties are very limited. All it takes is one crack in the Dicor sealant on the roof to create a leak. A good buddy of mine just found a leak around his skylight. There was a crack in the sealant there and the plywood and ceiling was wet. But his rig is 3 yrs old. I saw a thread one time on RVnet where a guy had water damage due to seals leaking with another manufacturer and they told him the sealants were only guaranteed for 90 days, said it was his fault, and denied the claim!

Someone at sometime somewhere in the life of this forum posted about learning the hard way not to make checking roof seals a routine. I know that was one thing that the previous service manager at our dealer tried to emphasize to us. He suggested checking every six months or before and after winterizing, etc. So far we have been diligent with the checks

I am doing the same thing every six months. I just did my roof last week and will do it again and check the caulking this fall.

So in other words the rubber roof is guaranteed but the caulking isn't.

According to my dealer, the rubber roof warranty is only good if you apply the proper cleaner/treatment twice a year during the warranty period. A pain yes, but much cheaper than having to pay for a new roof.

Mine is now out of warranty, but it makes me want to go ahead and wrap the roof with Eternabond as a preventative item. I mean a crack that can leak could be so small you are not even going to see it. Anyone used Eternabond and done a complete wrap?

I used Eternabond on my roof. I have half my seals covered in the tape, and plan on getting the other half done this year.

It's the same as the warrentee on your car/ truck, you are required to maintain that vehicle at your expense oil, filters etc.

Has anyone done this... or even read about folks on other rv forums who have done this? Does it actually work well and how long does it extend the life of the seals for? Sounds like a good idea. Thanks

I have read about the use of Eternabond on several other RV sites. Most say it is flexable and very strong. Once applied, you will never get it off and will last forever (that's the claim).
Some people remove the old caulk first and some just apply the Eternabond tape over the old caulk. I'm about ready to order some soon.

I'm guessing that if the seals are still like new, putting the eternal bond over them would be fine? I suppose it would be imperative to make sure the sides of the tape adhere so then water won't still seep under. I like this idea if it extends the life of the "seals" for many more years, especially if it means we won't have to scrape and recaulk!

Eternabond? YES!

I just replaced my skylight on my '07 Octane Toy Hauler three months ago and used eternabond by itself to seal it in, no lap sealant. The skylight was literally broken apart at every one of the 28 screw holes! The factory installed the light over very thick putty tape, so when they pulled the screws down tight, I am sure they fractures the area around the screw holes right then. I continued the use of Eternabond on every seam I have and around the vents. The only place i use Dicor is around the luggage rail posts since they are just small round dabs.

Eternabond is THE best that I know of. I use it on roof panel seams of new aluminum patios I build and repair and NEVER have to go back to fix leaks.

4"x100' roll is $95.00.

16 years ago I had my home built, I had the contractor use 40 year guarantee caulk on the aluminum siding butt ends. Today its all cracked I wish I had a tube of it so I could see who made it to get it replaced under the guarantee. So if your going to buy this tape keep a package so you can get it replaced under the guarantee.

This is an interesting video showing the use of Eternabond on an rv roof. Looks like the ticket to me.
