Keeping fridge side vent cooler

Can I loosely place a piece of aluminum foil over fridge side vent to reflect sun away from it?

If it blocks any airflow, nope. They must have air circulation, the more the better. Otherwise go for it.

In Florida I saw several RVs with little awnings above the fridge vents on the side. Not sure how much this helps but I would think a fan system would work better to increase flow though the system.
Note that in my case and others I have heard about the internal vent system was poorly installed. My upper area has a curved metal plate that is intended to move hot air outside. Except they left dollar bill size holes on the corners to make it easier to install and no insulation above the metal vent plate. Result? Hot air was going under the cabinet around the fridge heating the fridge sides and top and the counter top was always toasty warm. Hard to get a fridge cold while heating it up.

As others have done I added vent fans that run on 12 volts.
