Keeping hose from freezing

Going camping this weekend and the night temps will range from 26 degrees to 36 degrees at night. How do I keep my water hose from freezing?? Anything else I should be aware of for cold nights?

When we are in freezing temps, we put enough water in the fresh water tank to get us by and then unhook the fresh water hose. At those temps (26 to 36) I wouldn't think you would have a problem with the tanks freezing. We have camped in our unit down into the teens and not had a problem.

X2 A fairly large quantity of water, such as a 25 gal tank, will not freeze nearly as quickly as just a couple of gallons. I agree with hausknwa that it would be lot easier to disconnect and drain your hose for the night, than to invest in a much more expensive hose heat wrap. JMHO

The temps might be 26-36 degrees, but a wind chill could be an added issue as well. I normally disconnect the hose in the evening, drain it, re-connected it..., and turn it back on the next morning. If you have someone that may need use of the bathroom during the night, keep a bucket of water aside in the bathtub (to dump down the toilet). If the CG outside water valve is frozen the next morning, I just heat up a little water (from the bucket) and pour it over the valve (been there, done it).

If your at a CG with full hookups, letting one sink faucet "drip" during the night should keep you out of trouble (leaving corresponding grey dump valve open).

Homemade Heated Water Hose.

Also, heater strips can be purchased at Wal-Mart or Lowe's. Wrap your water hose with aluminum foil. Run the heat strip along the length of the hose, then slide some black pipe insulation foam over the hose.

I also heard of some folks running rope-lights along the hose; and wrap with pipe insulation. Once the rope-light is plugged into an outlet, it'll keep the hose from freezing.

Same for us, we've been out when it hit 13 with no issues. We also have the PIRIT hose if we have hook-ups, but since some parks don't have "no freeze" water supplies available we've filled the tank. We never leave the sewer hose out when it's going to get that cold, I only connect it when I go to dump.

As a side bar, I originally made my own heated hose using a heat tape and pipe insulation which worked well also.

If you leave the water trickle you could end up with a mess if it freezes in the sewer hose.

Wind chill will not affect the water freezing.

I guess anything is possible under extreme conditions...., but I would think that the OP's concern of only an over night freeze he should be fine. On a couple of occasions over the years when I got caught in a late fall overnight freeze with frost the only thing that didn't have frost on it the next morning was the sewer hose (same with fellow campers). I figured the warm air rising from the CG sewer system inside the sewer hose might have been doing its job

Hmmm, I would have thought that the presence of a 15 mph wind on top of a 34 degree outside temp, creating the lower "wind chill" temp could be an issue (freeze). Must be why weather forecasters say "feels like"

On Edit: I guess where wind chill comes into play is when the outside temp is at/or below freezing then it may speed up the freezing process (?).

I put that pipe foam on mine and it's gotten down to 23* with no problems, but I do leave a slow drip when it gets that cold.

Wind chill makes the temperature feel colder to living things that produce heat. EX: people produces heat and it warms the air around themselves. Wind blows the heat away, replacing the warm air with cold air making it feel colder to the person. A water hose outside will loose heat quicker if it is windy and the water is warmer than the air temperature, BUT once the water in the hose is the same temperature as the air, the wind has no effect on the temperature of the water. The temperature of the water in the hose can not get colder than the ambient air temperature no matter how hard the wind blows.

We have been out in temps in the low 20’s. We just fill our underbelly tank (un-insulated), and use the water pump as needed. We have had no issues. The hose is kept in the cargo hold.

tlhdoc, you are spot on in your explanation of wind chill vs actual temp. My father was a WWII pilot with all things weather-related as a hobby. He explained this issue in pretty much the same way. It is, in fact, impossible for water standing in the hose to get colder than the ambient temp, period.

I always thought wind chill was the way cold felt to a person, It has no effect on how a water hose would react to cold temperature.

Hi Bob. Thank you for the suggestions. Fri night I think will be the coldest. Why would you leave the gray water valve open? Can you dump gray water on the ground at CG's??

I only mention leaving it open not knowing how full the tank was prior to "dripping" the faucet over night.

You would have to ask at the particular CG your camping at.., but I wouldn't think a CG with full hook-ups would allow it. I know at some State and Federal CG's I've camped at you can run gray water on the ground, but always best to ask.

Bob
