Keeping Travel Trailer Plugged In

Hello,

I am new to camping.I sometimes keep my travel trailer plugged in at home.I was wondering if I am going to overcharge my battery by keeping my trailer plugged in long term.Am I being overprotective or should I not plug my camper in longterm.

I see you have a 2012 Jayco Jayfeather Ultra Light, most of the newer campers have a 3-stage smart power unit so you should be fine. If you want to double-check, grab the model of converter you have and Google search it to confirm that it is a SMART 3-stage. You should check the water levels in the battery periodically (once a month) to ensure it's not low.

I leave my 2011 23j plugged in alot of the times and have not had an issue with the batteries

I'm curious about my 2005. Have I been ruining the battery by leaving it plugged in? Should I disconnect the battery?

Just check the water levels. Shouldn't be an issue. We kept our 04 JayFlight plugged in 24 x 7.

Typically the boil battery type converters are the very old - like pre-2000 types (not sure at all as my oldest trailer was a 2004). Typically. Most trailers today ship with 2 stage converters - slow charge and maintain. Good 3 stage - fast charge/slow charge/maintain aren't all that common on lower end trailers, but are on some of the higher end units.

So to me, knowing what make/model my charger was would tell me if it is OK to leave it plugged in.

And for me, if if I had an old one that would boil batteries that would be the first change I'd make to the trailer.....for me, life is easier if I just leave it plugged in and check the water levels twice a year...

some of the older converters have an external smart attachment available that can be plugged into the existing converter to upgrade it. My 2004 IOTA is that way, and it cost about $30 and 15 minutes to install. Most of the time was just accessing the converter behind a false wall.

Before we fulltimed we kept our previous 5er, a 2005 Eagle behind our garage plugged in all the time, no issues with the battery.

Original battery lasted about 6 years.

I have kept all my campers plugged in 24/7 year round and have never had a problem. You need to check the water level periodically.

Mine is plugged in year around, fridge is on cool year around and usually has plenty of beer in there.

Ours is plugged in year round now too, guess since we live in it while working and seeing the USA we need to keep it plugged in !!
