Lightbulb Kids in the camper

Going through our our first toddler in the camper. By the time we got our Jayco 174BH our daughter was about 3 and old enough not to worry about rolling out of the bunk bed at night. Now our son is 1.5 years old and using his pop-in-play for sleeping in the camper is getting old. We wanted to move him to the bottom bunk this year but weren't sure how to secure him in the bed. Less so from rolling out but more so to keep him from escaping when we put him down. I thought about set-up up a rail or guard but then decided to re-purpose one of our indoor safety gates. See the picture below for the result. I believe this will solve our issues and create a secure, dark and comfy place for him to sleep. My initial concern was that it looks like some kind of child jail cell and that protective services would be after me (joke). The only initial negatives I have found are that the gate swings out when it opens making it a tight fit when trying to navigate around the open gate. I was also a little concerned about safety in an emergency and fumbling with the gate latch in case of a fire or something. That said the gate is not so secure that I cannot rip it out by hand in the event of an emergency exit. So any other thoughts, suggestions or things I should consider? I am pretty happy with it overall and will keep everyone posted after his first night in the bunk.

We used this for our son until he was about 2 or 3. Works well, just sits in place by the weight of the mattress.

It folds down and was good in our 174BH but a bit tight when it was open and trying to get in the bathroom...

Reminds me of my childhood. We had bunks like that, we called them coffins.

Our parents shoved us back a bit, when we were small, and told us to stay put, and we did.

We just shoved a pool noodle under the edge of the mattress for protection from rolling out. Other than that, our kids stayed put.

I built a rail out of 2 x 2s and dowel rods with hinges top and bottom to make an L shape to protect ours from rolling out.

I put some L brackets that slide under the mattress to hold it in place. They could climb over as it was about 8 inches taller than the mattress but nobody rolled out onto the floor.

I gave it to my daughter who uses it for the grand kids.

Our younger child was 2 when we bought our camper. We didn’t do anything special to keep him in the lower bunk, but had he been any younger, I would have tried a pool noodle on the edge.
