Just off the top of my head, but I think the downward pressure of snow would have to be pretty substantial to break the mount. I don't know how many pounds per square inch it would take to damage the roof, but the mount's base spreads out that force to minimize a single point of pressure. On the other hand, depending on how your winters are, a cover used to spread out that foot print and protect the antenna, doesn't seem like it would hurt, either.
