That's a good question, I went to AAA to get my route or to goodsamclub.com, along with other app like google maps I would at least start there.

I would use google maps to plan the route. I would try to migrate towards 90E as fast as I could.

Out of curiosity - what is prompting you to come to our glorious city of Lockport, NY.

During our recent long hauls I used RandMcNally's trip planner for some initial ideas along side Google Maps.

Rand McNally allowed me to add in stops and had some neat fuel planning
Rand McNally - TripMaker

Google Maps however offered alternative routes on an initial search. It also allows you to drag around your route to make changes. Pretty portable onto your cell or tablet. Once I had a general direction, I set in guestimations for stop locations so I could estimate some evening stops.

Looks like your route goes through Colorado and through the Eisenhower. I-70 is an amazing drive if you have never done it before. I suggest a bit of RR before you cross the pass. Perhaps Heaton Bay Campground in Frisco.

When you get here (Lockport NY), stop by Groff's Tavern on Union St. "Coldest Beer in town." Ask for Howie.

On our end...

You'll probably wind up in I-90 E. Then take I-290 W and I-990 toward Lockport. You'll get dumped off onto a 2 lane road (Millersport) at the end of I-990, take a left onto it and it will take you to SR-78. The city of Lockport is to your left.

Be sure to visit the Erie Canal locks while you're there if it's boating season. They're really something to see! Welcome to our neighborhood; that's a looooong trip!
