Thumbs up Learned something new today....

I have always been impressed with the low point drains on my Jayco Eagle... but tonight I learned something new about them....

Since it is going down to +30F tonight I figured I had better drain the water from the system.. so as usual I opened the low point drains then went in and opened all the taps including the outside shower.. and of course it drained all the lines .... i was getting ready to pull the plug on the water heater... and opened the pressure relief valve... low and behold the hot water tank started draining... ... .... man I like this Jayco... just have to make sure to drop the shower hoses. so they drain.

Yep, I learned that not to long ago as well..., and sure makes it easy.

I drain my HW tank after each camping trip because I found leaving water (previously heated) in the tank for a couple of weeks will cause the water to have a foul oder.

So it is getting a little chilly in Saskatoon is it? I have a couple of friends that live in Saskatoon. I am sure they are getting ready for the great migration. It is to bad they have a time limit to keep the benefits they paid for when they were working. I will see them in about 6 weeks. It seems they always leave in a snow storm.

-4C this am... Technically the law reads that I cannot be out of my home province more than 183 days a year... fortunately there are no boarder checks when going into other provinces.. I plan to leave Oct 20 and return April 1... worst thing about the trip S is US customs ... they act like I am going to overstay my welcome ... gee 5 million+ Mexicans there illegally and they worry about me...

sean45 So what you are saying is you don't have to pull the plug on the wh, just open the pressure relief valve & the low point drain correct. Larry

Larry,

As mentioned, I do the same process leaving the plug "as-is", and I also open a sink hot water faucet(s) for faster draining at the low point drains.

I know that some are not going to believe this and my trick may not work for some folks due to the way your water lines run through your unit. However, my HWT will not drain (even if I open a hot water spigot) until I open the HWT bypass valve that's on the pipe that connects to both the hot and cold water lines (Note that the other two bypass valves must be open too).

I think what happens is I get an air-lock because the water in the hot water line has to be pulled from floor level back up into the tank and there isn't enough water in the cold water line to create a siphon effect to make it happen. By opening the bypass valve, air gets drawn up through it into the HWT and allows the tank to drain.

As far as I'm concerned, you're welcome here anytime, and stay as long as you like. + = good neighbors. If you think getting into the US from Canada is a pain try getting in from Mexico (legally). Even with all the proper papers and ID's it's a royal PITA.

I think getting a total drain from the water heater is best checked by removing the plug. Some will drain completely and some will still leave a gallon or so.

Seann, I think that all border stations on our northern border should be closed and the people that man them get sentenced to work the southern border. The border patrol employees are rude to us too. They all need to be replaced with people that think and act differently.

The boarder is a 5 minute drive from my house. Prior to 9/11 we use to cross the boarder several times a week to get gas and milk at a dairy farm. The boarder guards would get to know us and just wave us thru. I ve always considered it a privilege to go into the US and still do. Now it is a much more serious affair to cross the boarder as we all know.

I agree that it is a privilege to be allowed to enter the USA... but to be treated like a criminal when I am bringing money into an area... strange thing is I find it easier to enter the USA from Mexico than from Canada, and I am always treated better by the boarder agents in the South..

Funny, I encountered a jerk at Los Algodones last winter. I wisely kept my mouth shut but it was not easy.

Only one question, do you bother to blow out your lines after draining?? I usually blow out my lines and pump non toxic antifreeze through all the lines. Would be afraid of just using low point drains in my unit. Been winterizing my trailer this way since 1968.

Yeah - my low points don't get all the water as good as I would like. In the early season when it is just getting below freezing overnight and I am still going to camp I generally just blow out as insurance. When the hard winter comes I blow out and do anti-freeze. Lots of folks just pump antifreeze, but I have found that if I blow them clear first I use significantly less antifreeze.

To me, if it's not full of pink stuff it isn't winterized.
