Leaving your reading books behind

Okay, how many of you looked at this due to the subject header?

In my upcoming trip with a rental Redhawk, I'm bringing books as I'm a huge reader and much prefer that over watching TV at night.

I was wondering if the campgrounds have some sort of lending library where I could leave the books that I've finished. That way I don't have to haul them all home. I could never toss a book, even in the recycle bin (unless it's really trashed).

I know not every campground will be the same, but since I've never stayed at one, I was kind of wondering about this.

Thanks

PS, I have books on my ipad, but I still much prefer a real book and some study says you sleep better if you're not reading your electronic devices before you try to sleep.

Several of our regular campgrounds do have a lending library. Some of the books are in pretty nasty condition.

Thanks Hbravo! Good to know. Mine would be in good condition, but know what you mean. That type of condition does get tossed in the recycle bin around here.

I'll keep my eye out for them at the various campgrounds and will leave them when I can.

If you track down used bookstores, some of them will swap books with you at no charge - you leave 20 of yours and take 20 of theirs. We did that years ago. It may have been limited to just paperback books, I don't recall the specifics.

I have to go with the iPad way.. (Sorry).. If you worry about the not reading anything electronic before bed, use the reverse print.. I have the kindle app and I am sure iBooks has the same thing. Black background with white letters. You can also turn your screen brightness down too.. I always make sure I have a few books loaded on it.. I also keep my setup / tear down list on it, camping supplies list, etc.. We turn on wifi hotspot on one of our phones when we travel as well. (I have sprint and can turn it on and off and only pay for those days). That way I can connect my pad to the internet and surf anytime I want to.. I am the Admin for a Laser Engraver forum and need to stay in touch..

They would love to get new to them books. Many of them have been on those shelves forever so a new find will bring many smiles. We bring extra from home and leave along the way. Great reads on the beach with a breeze and the waves just watch out for high tide. In your travels up the coast when you walk in some neighbor hoods they have little book cabinets on a post " take a book- leave a book".

And you thought this thread wasn't going anywhere!

Check out http://www.bookcrossing.com/ as a possible answer as to what to do with no longer needed books.

A lot of the CG's we have been to (even a state park in the Keys) have a section for taking and leaving books. I usually go down to the local library near the CG and they have the used book section where you can drop off a book or purchase some from FREE to a $1. I have tried to read books on the tablet, but I guess I am from the old school and just prefer paper.

Just my thoughts,

Don

I always carry a supply of read paperbacks and hard covers. Most CG's have a swap box and also you may find them in the laundry.

Oh I know, but I'm not doing that in a rental RV unless there's a massive parking spot in front and I just happen to be driving by! HA!

Oh, good idea to leave them in the laundry room! I was kind of wondering about that before I posted.

The vast majority of campgrounds I have stayed at do have lending libraries. Note that some, if not most, will "weed out" those that are not PG...depending on the type of campground. One's I have worked at are family oriented and we do remove (and donate locally) those that youngin's may be drawn to I've gotten use to my Kindle, and enjoy it. Lots of books available, many free. I also download audio books that we bluetooth to our TV for the longer drives.
I agree about not watching TV. Much better to sit out, by a campfire and enjoy a good book...or your fellow campers.

Local libraries often have book/video-swapping shelves, and if "antiquing", many of those stores have a book section where they allow swapping.

My wife loves to read, and about four years ago, I bought her a Kindle. It solved the problem of her stashing the read books in the bedroom closet (she too did not just want to toss the book away, and we were "lazy" in donating them). She said it was one of the most "Useful" things I ever bought her!

So, best of all worlds; download a few books to the kindle, start a nice cozy campfire, and read away. Save a tree or two.

Indian cave state park in Nebraska has a book swap area a tote at there museum. You could always leave it in the public restroom/shower house and right free on it. I do that with my old Trailer Life magazine.

You can donate your read books to the local Goodwill and buy books at a low cost. This is another possibility.

I like the old style paper white Kindle. I can't read long on the Ipad or any of the newer brilliant screen devices. Check out the paper white screen type readers. I did and have never looked back.

Most of the books on my iPad are manuals for the RV and motorcycle. But I did sign up for the weekly BookBub email and have downloaded a couple of E-books. My library card still gets regular use, though.
