"Leftovers" in between shutoff valve and cap after dumping tanks?
Hi everyone,
We are having an issue where we always seem to have a "leftover" discharge of our tanks between the shut off valve and sewer cap after dumping our tanks in our 29.5 BHDS. I am pretty sure we are doing everything correctly but we always experience about a 1/2 gallon (or less) of nasty stuff every time we remove the cap after traveling to hook up at a new site.
Any thoughts and/or tips to prevent this? Are we doing something wrong?

My trailer did the same thing. I'm guessing it's residual from the last trip. But what I can't understand is how? The valves are closed.

I typically get about a cup of grey/black water trapped behind the cap between outings. A gallon seems excessive. If you have time at the dump station or at a site with full hook ups, I'd try blocking up the door side of the TT so you get better drain toward the sewer side. You can also try a flush wand or back flusher to make sure there isn't any debris keeping one of the valves from completely closing. There is also a chance that one of the valves just leaks a bit more that it should.

Sounds like the valve leaks. Could be debris preventing a good seal or a defective valve. Do you flush the tank after dumping? If you are in warranty a visit to the dealer might be in order. I Keep a box oh disposable gloves for setting up the sewer and dumping.

ok - might not be quite 1/2 a gallon but it just feels like a lot when its nasty
I will try flushing it with some water to see if its the valve that leaks and i will look into that "twist valve".
If all else fails...I will make sure to get my wife some really good rubber gloves :P

I am in agreement that you most likely have a leaky valve.. Couple of things that might help besides the obvious (change out valve). Is that when you go to dump bring a leveling board and roll up on it on your other side to put your TT at a slight tilt towards the dump side. This will help in removing more of what is left in the bottom of your tank. Also the item that JASONCW linked to is a great alternative if you don't want to get into changing out your existing equipment right now.

This is what I use. It also allows you to open both gray tank valves (while keeping this one closed) in order combine both tanks for a larger capacity because the shower always uses more water than the other drains.

Great idea. I never thought of this, but maybe that's because I only have one gray tank. But my 2016 on order will have two, so good to know.

You could always use a old dish pan under the discharge to catch the little bit that does leak out also get a cap the has the small hose fitting in it so you can use that first for draining then hook up your main connector for your hose

In our first fifth wheel I thought I had a small leak. The dealer installed another valve next to the cap after that no problem. Now that we purchased a new rig same issue again ! I found that if I waited a while because of the angle of the pipes most all was gone . I am not a patient person waiting for the lines to completely drain so I will be installing another valve at the cap like I had on my old rig .

Just for clarification.... You are emptying the "Black Tank" first? Then the "Gray tank" last ?.... Right?

We have always had the problem of water in the pipes and I don't think its a leaky valve. The tanks are well away from the outlet and the slope is not that great. As we go down the road, the water moves towards the outlet. Our outlet also points straight down so that any water in the pipe collects in the cap.
I bought one of the caps with a hose connector on it for use on a gray water outlet. When it is time to hook up the hose to the outlet, I stretch out the hose and connect it to the sewer first. Then I lay out the hose in one of those slinky like supports. At the trailer end of the hose, I use an elbow fitting to attach to the outlet.
While holding the elbow beneath the drain cap, I open the small hose cap. The water drains into the hose. It stops in a few seconds and then I undo the large cap and hook the sewer hose to the outlet. Put the small hose cap on the cover before replacing it after disconnecting the hose.

While the tanks are dumping [black then grey] you might gently move the valve in and out a few times. Sometimes this will remove what's stuck to the blade causing the valve to leak, if that's the case.

Just what I was thinking.
If you have time at a dump station I would have the sewer gate partially open, maybe half way. Go into the TT, with a full 5 gallon bucket of water, and dump it down the toilet as fast as you can. Might repeat that a couple of times and do it at least once with the sewer gate wide open. If there is debris caught in the valve, it should help knock it free.
Also after dumping put about 5 gallons of water in both tanks for the drive home. Add a cup of liquid fabric softener, and 1/2 cup of Pinesol down the tanks with that water. Let it slosh around good. The liquid fabric softener, is a water wet, it will break the water tension, so that water can get into the crude better and help loosen it as you drive down the road.

We had that issue the first season we had out tt. I bought a clear elbow with port built in so I could back flush the black tank. That took care of the leakage. I suspect a bit of tp was hanging up and preventing the valve from fully closing. I have also purchased an extra gate valve and have started back flushing the black with gray water. Dump black tank, close extra valve, open gray and let it fill the black. I can do this about three times and still have enough gray to flush the hose out. It is amazing how much flows out when doing this back fill procedure, and my tank sensors read correctly since I started doing that. You could also have a seal that has dried out.
