Lithium batteries / generator / microvawe

Hello,

I have 400Ah lithium batteries, solar and recently added dual fuel Champion generator (1800W on propane). I am new to the generator thing and had some initial problems with charging the batteries - I did not know that I need to turn off the EMS, otherwise, no charge was going to the batteries. Also, I needed to limit the Amps going into batteries (12 amps, if I recall correctly), otherwise the generator was overloaded and stopped charging.

The issue that I do not know how to solve it is - I am running the generator, let's assume 12 amps are going in. I am turning on the microwave which makes the generator overloaded and it stops charging the batteries at all. I can run the microwave from the batteries without any issue.

Question - how to do to be able to run microwave, while charging the batteries? It is not a big deal as I will be using the generator literally a few time per year, but still I would like to understand what the solution is.

Thanks!

If your generator is putting out 1800W, your charger is using 1440W (12A *120V). You have 3A or 360W remaining. You microwave will likely require around 900W or 7.5A. You will either need to supply the batteries with less amps or temporarily turn the charging off while you use the microwave.

The generator is too small to do both at full capacity.
You can do one of a several things.

1. Get something like the magnum hybrid inverter/converter. It can automatically take power from where it’s needed. Eg. it can run an air conditioner from a too small generator by boosting from the batteries. It’ll automatically step down the charging amps while bigger loads are running. They’re not the only choice, but first one to come to mind.

2. Get an EMS with load shedding capability, and have the microwave be higher priority than the converter. It’ll shutdown or reduce battery charging while the microwave is running.

3. Manually turn off battery charging while using the microwave.

4. Limit the battery charging to about 7A, so the generator can always run both.

I have Magnum 2800 inverter. I understand that the generator is too small to charge the batteries on the full load (say 12A) and at the same time provide power to microwave. I was wondering why microwave could not take the power from lithium batteries, while the generator is charging the batteries.

In relation to EMS, as I mentioned, I need to turn off it completely while charging batteries. Otherwise, it does not let the power in. Is there a way to set it up differently, i.e. not to turn it off? I believe I have this one

thanks!

On inveter generators you can either buy or make your own neutral bonding plug to be able to run the generator with a EMS active.
