Ricky must have had a helluva engine in that car to pull this up that hill, especially with all the rocks that Lucy collected along the way!

Note the "helper" wheel underneath the trailer tongue. What's the history on why those were done away with?

I think the helper wheel set with air ride on it would be genius

They actually used 2 different vehicles in that movie. The first one was a 1953 Mercury Monterey with a 125hp engine, but to get over those Sierra Nevada mountains they had to switch to a 1953 Lincoln Capri with a 205hp engine. The trailer was 36 feet long. That hill looks kinda like the one I went up, this morning.

We use weight distribution hitches now. Up until a few years ago there was a company called Stinger that made helper wheels. They are out of business. When all is said and done, a W/D is far better than helper wheels.

On another note, back in those days, no one worried about how fast they were going to tow up a steep grade, then again, they didn't have the I system either.

That bogie wheel was to keep the rear bumper from dragging on the ground which would cause a shower of sparks which would ignite the gasoline dripping from the leaky gas tank which would...... Bye Desi, bye Lucy.
Honestly, I learned everything I know about trailerin from that movie.

We watched it on TMC earlier tonight and was just think what a load that car had. I have seen way too many people giving direction like on the movie and it gave the same results. I was surprise when it was over I was enjoying it so much.

That was fun. I'm sure many of us can relate to those first time moments. In 2012 we visited Yosemite and drove the trailer over Tioga pass down to June Lake. Tried not to use the brakes too much, kept it in low gear and when RPM's got too high would brake back down. lol...I love the scene where he is backing up into the relatives drive way. And the times he breaks out the owners manual to learn "how-to".
