Two things come to mind. The responsibility is on the driver, no two ways about it. My other thought is why build a bridge only 8 feet high. If it is old, update it. If it is new, shame on you and make it higher. This type of road hazard is unnecessary, unsafe and easily remedied.

Every trailer I had one of the 1st things I do after getting the rig home is have one of my kids go up on the roof and put the end of the tape measure at the top of the radio antenna (This is the highest point on the roof) and we measure to the ground. Add 6 inches and that is my minimum clearance height.

A man has GOT to know him limitations!! Heightwise that is. I have had to detoure a couple of times due to low overpasses, mostly in small towns or back country. But I have never come within 6" of hitting anything but the antenna. I have a sticker on my dash in plain sight that states my safe clearance at 12'9", and I will not attempt a 13' unless I know for a fact it IS 13'. One time I backed up a bit of traffic by having the DW get out with the hand-talkie and eyeball the clearance..... missed it by THAT much

Sounds like a few school bus drivers I don't know. They misjudged the bridge and well.....stupid is as stupid does. Know your height before you go under.

Besides, this happened Canada. No use in suing anyway. Lawsuits in Canada almost never pay anything more than actual damages incurred. Keeps insurance much lower, and no one thinks of an accident as if they just won the lottery.

But does your sticker also say 3.88m?
If you were driving in Canada, approaching a bridge that said 3.80m clearance, would you know if you were going to make it?
And as a mea culpa; I took at closer look at the signage after someone pointed it out. It does look like it had both metric and English measures on the sign; the metric is on the left side, kind of hidden by the wreckage. So yeah, no excuse.

Starting to think that this could be a fleet replacement strategy for the rental companies. A large percentage of the trucks seem to be rental units. Perhaps Penske et al should start rotating their older stock into this county so they can buy newer stock after the inevitable destruction.
