Man misjudges trailer height

https://www.insidehalton.com/news-st...lle-underpass/

Saw this in the local news. The underpass goes under the main road and direct into a mall. Seen a few miscalculations and ripped off antennas but this guy really miscalcuted or rather didn't ....

8`10" clearance... how in the world did the driver not know the height of his FW. Do stupid stuff, win stupid prizes.

Saw that on the news last night too. I can see peeling off an AC unit or a vent but the top half of the master is a bit excessive.

I scraped going into a fuel dock our first winter out because I believed the clearance sign. Had to go on to the roof and remove the Maxair cover so I could back out (after fueling)

I might understand a 1/2" or so error, but that is ridicolous!

Man misjudges trailer height

He have a 1 ton truck and didn’t feel the trailer back there. Or he have a F150 and the brakes were not enough to stop the tV/ trailer combination.

Well there's the problem. The sign was in English measurement, and all the rest of the signs in Canada are in metric. This is Oakville ON. Guy probably thought he had clearance of 8.1 meters (about 24 feet). It's a problem when these old archaic signs are left behind in a new metric world.

Not defending the driver in any way...you need to know your heights. However, this happens all the time here. New Stanton PA is a high traffic commercial truck region with the intersections of the PA Turnpike, I-70, Toll-66 and Rt.119/toll 43 to Morgantown WV. There is a UPS hub, Fed EX Hub, and dozens of large shipping warehouses located within 15 miles of this zone.

Bells Mills Covered Bridge is on a side road that connects directly from some of the warehouses and New Stanton proper. Not a week goes by that there isn't a truck and 53' trailer stuck on this road with nowhere to turn around. These are pro drivers that should know better than to trust a gps. But it happens all the time.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Be...!4d-79.7100592

Again, not defending this particular driver. Just know that it happens more often than we think.

we alllllllllllllllllllllllllmost had a similar incident.

Brand new to the vehicle, wife's turn to drive.
I'm exhausted and snoozing in the dinette.

One eye cracks open enough to see a a yellow sign "Tunnel Ahead 9' 3""

Panic, exhaustion, semi-coherent about all I can do is yell (stammer loudly) "we won't fit! we won't fit!"

That woke me up!

I don't think he had enough truck to tow that trailer. If he did it wouldn't have stopped until he got to the kitchen.

Did they factor in the damage to his pride?

I did that years ago but fortunately I only broke the folded down tv antenna off the roof. I was going very slow and was able to stop before it wiped the ac off the roof.

I blamed it on the GPS!

Unfortunally not the case here .... There are hugh yellow warning signs in both measurements and the sign warns also no buses or transports. Multiple warnings before bridge and a u turn section to change your mind.

That’s nothing that a roll of Duct Tape and a blue tarp won’t take care of.

X2 Now that should be on everyone's list of must need items. And I bet he cancelled his vacation because of that little dent. Tape & Tarp and your good to go !

I will fully admit that I can be a dummy at times. I used our labeler and printed out my height when hitched up and pasted it on my windshield to have as a constant reminder!

Google maps has a good street level view of it. Can’t say it isn’t well marked. Apparently my Allstays app doesn’t have low underpass data.
