Memory Foam Mattress - Cut to Size?

I know there are a lot of mattress questions and we bought a 3" topper from Costco last year, which is now on our bed at home. So I was looking for a permanent solution for the TT. Costco didn't have any of the Queen 3" toppers last week but had a complete Foam matress. I was wondering if anyone ever bought a regular queen memory foam mattress and then cut to length? I know there are different layers of foam so don't know if this is possible.

We can't keep the longer length due the the way our matress is positioned between the back slide and our wardrobe. No room to spare.

Thanks!

We had to cut a Queen memory foam mattress from Costco to size for our camper.

Next we are going to add toppers to the rear bunks, so now it's both shortening and cutting a curve.

When doing the actual cutting please don't do it inside your trailer as it makes a mess.

Was the mattress the same kind of foam all the way through or was there different types in layers?

I'm concerned about air chambers in the middle where if cut won't give proper support anymore. I know different mattresses have different constructions.

To clarify it was a 3" memory foam topper that I cut, and it appears to be the same kind of foam the entire way. No air chambers, textures or designs that would create different feeling sections or loss of support.

I got an extra foam matress for one of the bed in the back of our camper. The standard matress just isn't thick enough to support and adult.

I had to cut the new mattress foam to get it to match in size. What I found works really, really good in cutting the foam is an electric carving knife.

That is exactly what we were planning to do, but Costco is out of the Queen toppers. My wife called Costco today and they are changing brands and hope to have the new toppers in by Tuesday....cutting it close to our trip (no pun intended), so that is why I had the thought of buying a complete replacement mattress and trimming the extra 5" to 6" off an end.

I just purchased the 3" memory foam topper from Costco for my 17z, I think the brand was Nova Foam. The queen size was a perfect fit and for the first time actually got a good nights sleep in the TT. I also had to keep checking in with Costco as they were out of them for quite a while.

Nova foam is the brand they are discontinuing. They had all sizes except for queen.

We bought a memory foam "sofa sleeper" in "short queen" size from Amazon (free shipping!). Not sure if this is the size you need but it is very comfortable for us. It measures 60x72x4.5inches. I found memory foam short queen mattresses at mattress stores but I found they were way more expensive, and heavier. We also added a 1 inch "convoluted" (think egg-crate but not as thick) mattress topper from Joann and a waterproof padded mattress cover. It's very comfortable! Good luck!!

Hi Peter,

I am interested to hear how you made out with your rear bunks. We are eagerly awaiting delivery of our new Eagle 28BHBE and I believe our bunks will be the same size as yours. I was also going to try and pick up a Memory Foam Mattress from Costco or other big box store like you for the rear bunks. Based on Jayco`s measurements, it would appear that a King Size topper would required due to width and then shortened with the curve for the rear bunks. I would never have thought of the electric carving knife that we bring out once or twice a year and I intend to try it. Once you add 3 inches to the thickness of the bunks, will you have to use different fitted sheets ? Thanks for sharing your experience which may reduce my trial and error.

Electric carving knife works like a charm. Just measure twice and cut once...:-)

We did the same thing with a mattress topper for our summer trailer. A serrated bread knife worked well.

X3 on the electric carving knife. By the way, there are other stores that sell mattress toppers. Try Walmart or Target.

I bought the Costco Nova 3" memory foam in a full for my short queen. Now I wish I bought the queen and cut it to size as I'm fairly confident it is the same material throughout the mattress. I aired it out for 5 days, put a mattress protector with spill protection over it and have not had any odor issues. I've got a very sensitive nose so that is saying a lot.

We ended up purchasing 2 of the 3" Full Size memory foam toppers from Wal Mart. The only problem with these is that they are 1" narrower than the bunks so you will have a small gap on the side. Quite frankly I don't think it's noticeable enough to warrant paying for a queen to cut down.

Once you deploy the topper and give it 2 days to fully expand, just come with good scissors and cut small sections to make your curve. Better to start outside and keep trimming your way in.

Luckily this brand was one type of foam, so it didn't make a mess.

We use regular sheets, and just tuck the extra underneath. Not worth the headache trying to get them altered for the curve.

Our trailer is at the dealer getting some repairs, so when we get it back this weekend I can share photos.
