Mice in Battery Box

I've learned what to do to prevent mice, but this issue has never come up before. While doing a routine battery acid check I found a nest on top of the battery, plus they chewed thru the rope used to pick up the battery.

The box is a marine-type plastic box mounted on the tongue. It has 4 flared out section to enable entry of the wires. I assume they got in thru the unused flares.

I repaired the rope and cleaned out the mess. I used some foam rubber to plug up the flares. Anybody have a better solution?

I don't know for sure, but aren't those flares for venting the box as well as for the wires ?

I've always kept mice out of most EVERYTHING by plugging holes with steel wool; it might work well with those openings in the battery box provided you keep the steel wool away from the connections.

I think you should keep the vents open or at least two of them. I think this is a really rare occurrence and chances of it happening again are slim. For peace of mind a little box of D Con might be a good idea.

The cover has 2 vent holes on the top. They are small enough that a mice can't get through.

It happened mid Summer, and this weekend when i checked it they were back. So, maybe not so rare in my neck of the woods...
