My only suggestion is do the montana/wyoming part closer to the beginning of your trip than the end. We can get some nasty weather in October.

You may want to start sooner than that. Winter comes mid to late August in the northern Rockies. Early snow storms and temps below zero are not uncommon.

I would second doing the more Northern part of your trek in the beginning. We camped in the Black Hills toward the end of August last year, and the daytime temps were comfortable/borderline warm. But at night it dipped down into the low 40s. Of course, this was up in the hills, not down in the Badlands though. One night I forgot to set the furnace and woke up to my CPAP gurgling (condensation built up in the hose) and it was 55 INSIDE the rig. DW would have been NOT happy to wake up to that! We were SUPER impressed with the weather at that time of year, and it was nice to escape from the heat in Texas.

One thing's for sure though, you DO NOT want to be in Texas in August unless you like cooking yourself to death. While it doesn't often get as hot as it does in the desert SW, the humidity is higher, and it doesn't cool off at all at night. Makes for pretty uncomfortable camping if you don't have AC. October & November is high camping season in Texas. The heat has usually broken by the end of October, but it can still get pretty warm during the day in most areas.

Hate that humidity. But our summer weather here from about mid June on to mid September is not nice in the SW either. Daytime temps in the 100s and nights that do not cool below 90. Monsoon season!

We were in the Badlands, and Black Hills in October a few years back. Nights were in the 20-30 and we started home the day before they were forecasting -16 for an overnight low.
