Need a new mattress
What's a good queen that's not going to break the bank?

I took the unorthodox approach of taking the queen mattress from my bedroom at home and putting it into my travel trailer when getting a new one for at home.

Our home mattress cost me $3,000.00. I have a bad back and that's what it took. Nevertheless, at times I sleep bad because of car traffic, neighbor noise, etc.
Our crappy queen in our Jayco was enhanced with a fairly nice foam topper. At camp I go to sleep after a campfire with the family, and often at night I hear owls hooting and in early morning if I peek out the window I can spot a deer or a flock of turkeys.
As far as sleeping comfort, the crappy Jayco with foam topper beats all.

I don't remember but think its about 3". But I have to admit that the atmosphere contributes more to my sleeping than the bed itself.
Nevertheless, for a couplabucks its worth a try.

Do you mean "Ghostbed"? If so, that's pretty expensive. Plus its pretty thick. How did you bend it enough to get it thru the door and onto the bed?

We too took the approach of tossing out the RV mattress and just buying a conventional one for the RV. We were lucky that a "normal" mattress would work for us. There was no hinge required.

Yes Ghostbed. We got it on sale. It comes delivered compressed , so it fits through the door. You unroll it and cut plastic. Well worth the money.

For anyone considering taking a home mattress or buying one and putting it in place of the crappy factory mattresses, well if your bed in the campers are up front, hitch weight needs to be considered. Some of those thick residential ones are extremely heavy and really thick. So making them up in the confined space can be a struggle. Moving them around is restricted with cabinets and offsets for the storage below can be in the way. If your bed is crossways inside, this is really highlighted.

There are a lot of posts here that may be of some help with a hinged mattress.

Hard to answer without knowing your body size, how you sleep (position), firmness preference, etc. I say this because unless you are specific in what you’re looking for you’ll get a huge variation of opinions and possibly end up buying something you’re not happy with.
I recommend at least determining (if you haven’t already) whether you like an extra plush, plush, semi-firm or firm mattress and go from there.
I’ve found that it’s easier to find a good firm mattress than it is a soft one. Softer mattresses are typically more expensive at least for one that still provides support.

This sort of reasoning was partly why I took the queen mattress out of my bedroom for use in my trailer. it wasn't worn-out, we upgraded our bedroom set to a larger size so the queen was available.

Our queen mattress is something like 10" thick. It was a bit of a fight to get it into our little trailer. I ended up taking the dinette table down and I tipped the delivery folks that brought the new mattress to help bring it in, it went in through the door long-wise, then up and over the one dinette booth and into the spot.
I expect that it did increase tongue-weight, we don't load the cabinets over the bed while driving because of it.
I would like one that's a little lighter weight and frankly not quite as thick but like Gary52 I don't want to spend a lot. What I've done with mine works well enough for myself.

Big Rig Mattress
I bought a new RV Queen mattress for our previous camper from Big Rig Mattress.
I have them in the sleeper of my big trucks and if I ever need a new mattress at home I will order one for there as well.
Weight is not an issue and it is shipped in a box that will make it easy to get in any camper before you open it.

I'm with @Jayhawk_29 on watching the weight. We replaced the queen mattress in our new TT after the first week. I was first looking at a foam mattress from Ikea but in looking closely at the specs realized it came in at 88lbs! I ended up getting a Douglas mattress (popular mail order brand here in Canada) and at ~55lbs it is significantly lighter. Great mattress; enjoyed every night on it last season.
I would also mention that the shrink wrap mattresses are a blessing if you have tight confines to get through to the bedroom.
I do still need to put upgraded lift pistons on the bed foundation. It won't stay up on its own with the new mattress.

I saw a video one time that addressed the sorry factory mattresses that comes in new campers. The story behind it was that no manufacturer could ever provide the perfect mattress for everyone. So it was said in jest of course that they just provided something shaped like a mattress that covered the bed stand.
