New (to me) Tow Vehicle

Just made the trade - my 2007 Chevy gasser for a 2012 2500HD Silverado LTZ with the 6.6L Duramax Diesel and 6-Speed Allison transmission, paired with a 4:11 rear end axle ratio. LOVE IT! Rides better.

Fuel economy average (not towing) is running 19 mpg - highway 21. My 6.0L gas engine got 12 mpg average and 14 highway - at best (and 7.5 mpg towing).

Power and torque - no comparison! I'm gonna hook up and tow out to the Black Hills, Yellowstone, then my sister's house in Philipsburg, MT, starting June 1. I can't wait!

GVWR for new truck?

Wondering what the GVWR is for your new truck as we are looking to buy one. I love the gas mileage figures too. Will be interesting to see how they fair while towing. Please post update after you begin to tow!

It should be 10,000 lb gvwr for the D-Max if I remember correctly. The 6.0 gasser is 9,500 lb gvwr.

BUT..... It is possible he may have a little less available payload than I do because of the heavy D-Max. If you are considering the D-Max, even if you don't have a real heavy trailer now, seriously consider going with a 3500 SRW with the diesel. Will give you about 800lbs more payload, give or take the exact amount.

What is the payload amount listed in the drivers door jamb just for a comparison to our truck. Ours is a decently optioned LT, same cab/bed combo so it is somewhat close for option weight.

We have 2,75X lbs payload per the yellow sticker.

congratulations on the truck, you are especially going to like it up here in the mountains and thinner air. that is a great trip you have planned, there is a lot of things to see and do out here. take your time and have fun.

I've got the 2014 version of the Silverado and absolutely love it. It's quiet, smooth and has plenty of power. The Allison is amazing in tow haul mode. On a down hill ride the tranny does all the work of keeping the speed down....sometimes a little too much. Between that and the exhaust brake I hardly have to use my brakes.
With all the hp and torque it's easy to keep up highway speed on enen 6% grades.
With full fuel, 5th wheel hitch in place and two of us in the truck my rear axel weight is 3800lb. Max is 6400 I believe. My new 5er has a kingpin weight just under 2000 so I feel like I'm at my "personal limit". I don't like pushing the weight envelope. The truck is rated for a GCRW of just under 25k ( or so GM tells me).
My old 5er weighed just under 10k loaded and the truck hardly noticed it. The new one will weigh 10400 empty so I'm anxious to natch them up and hit the road.

Bottom line.....it's a GREAT truck! Happy camping!
