We just buy one of the inline blue water filters from Walmart every year. The ar around $17.00 and the water almost taste like bottled water. I'll let others with more experience answer about surge protectors.

We already own a 89 Class C (38 foot) so I'm keen on the water softener, we use the wal-mart blue ones, change every 90 days.

the surge protector is on my mind, old Bertha is a 50A RV, and her electrical system is pretty simple - all analog - the new Jayco we just bought is not - I'm thinking that we will want to protect the electronics as much as we can with the varied quality of Shore power available out there.

Anyone got some suggestions on a GOOD 50A Surge protector, maybe something with an AH meter on it also would be ice to see my draw at the pedestal.

Thanks in advance!

In a word, no. A water filter is prudent but not a must have. A surge protector the same answer. I have a 50a progressive dynamics that gives me peace of mind but I camped for many years with 4 different rv's without one with no incidents.

I would not camp with out either one..the water filter I buy one a year but being in MN our camping season is not that long. I had a camper that had the elec system fired from a power surge, I will not go without a surge protecter again. It is cheap insurance.

I use a particulate filter on the incoming water line, and have a Brita filter screwed onto the kitchen faucet.

I've seen some nasty stuff come though the water line where I'm at, and I don't want it in my TT water lines. The particulate filter takes care of that. And the Brita makes the water taste like bottled. The filter can be bypassed so it's just used for drinking and cooking water.

No surge protector for four years, and no problems yet. I'd like to have one, but just can't make myself spend the money. I'm a gambler, I guess.

I don't think many RVers use water softeners, but I think they make softener systems for RVs.

I also use the standard blue filter on the end of the hose. I have the progressive industries surge protector that I belive saved my electronics during a brown out in Moab. Got back to camper and the voltage was 85-90 volts. The surge protector shut down the camper until the voltage returned to normal. Boy did it get hot fast though!!
