Nitrogen

I see trailers come with nitrogen filled tires. Where do people go to fill the tires? Is it worth getting nitrogen filled in my tires? We don’t just camp weekends we go all over the USA.

There are some previous nitrogen discussion here and certainly on the Web but my take, with a Lexus that came with nitrogen is, it is a waste of money, and time when you try to find a place to top off the tires and with most RVs you are topping off tires more often. In the case of the Lexus, the dealer was 7 miles away so 14 miles round trip every Fall when the temps drop and the tire warnings come on. Discount tire does not carry it. Not worth the time. On top of that we are looking at a new Lexus and they want $89 to fill the tires with nitrogen.

Again, MHO, a waste of time and money for what little you get out of it.

The benefits of using nitrogen in tires for critical applications is well known. You'll find it in (some) aircraft tires, racing tires, etc.

The question on the table is "is it worth it to (me/us/the-average-joe)"?
Worth, value is a question only YOU can answer for yourself.

My answer is "nope, not worth the hassle and expense".

I'd say no. Proper pressure maintenance is more important in my book. Keep an eye on them and you'll be fine.

Well, since 78% of the air we breathe is Nitrogen, most of what we put in our tires is pretty close to being filled with mostly Nitrogen.

And, it's free!

On every set of tires I’ve bought that came with nitrogen (cars, TT etc), I’ve just used air once they needed topping off. I watch all my tires religiously and try to keep them to specs. I feel more comfortable doing that than finding someplace with nitrogen and a kid tech who isn’t as picky about psi as me.

Now, I hear if you put hydrogen in your TT tires it reduces your pin weight immensely!

I like to use a blend of gases in my tires, usually I go with about 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and about 1% of other gases that are floating around when I air up my tires. ~CA

You could always use helium and float over the road or Flubber and bounce down the road.

X2

Our TTs are not high pression instraments, where a 1/4 psi can make a difference in winning or loosing.

When I installed new tires, I had metal valve stems installed. Since then, I may top off my tires once a year. Most likely the air loss is from me, checking the tire pressures before every trip

I use nitrogen in all my vehicle and trailer tires. Very very rarely do i ever have to top off a tire.. I have a Nitrogen tank here at home and bought a tire fill kit on Ebay that adapts to the tank. I think i paid like $40 for the Nitrogen back in 2018 and still have a supply, although it is getting low. I wont use anything but Nitrogen, it make tire maintenance a breeze.

I have been in the tire business for 50 years. Many test have been done with nitrogen. It is not affected by heat or cold to change pressure. That’s all it does but in order for that to be true, all the air has got to be sucked out of the tire to remove any moisture in the tire first before nitrogen is put in! That is rarely done when installed new. If a person keeps pressure checked on all trips, his mileage is exactly same as nitrogen tires or better! People with nitrogen can’t keep tires checked as easy. My two cents! Nobody ask for it any more.

Thank you for your help. We put miles on our Jayco and I want to do anything to help my tires. We replace them every 4 years just to help keep us safe. With just two tires I want them to make our trip without problems.
