This video demonstrates why you should always do a pull test with the chocks still on the wheels and the front jacks just off the ground. A visual check on hitches that clamp (add opposed to sliding bars) is not enough.

Ouch, that hurt! I'm not familiar with fifth wheel hitches but from what he described the mechaism that is suppose to hold the pun was in place. What allowed the disconnect to occur?

He either "high hitched it" or didn't have the jaws safety pin in the correct spot

I've been following this couple for sometime..........for the humor factor. I use to watch Beavis and Butthead years ago and this is the closes to them I can currently find.
Couple of phrases come to mind watching them: "challenged" and "well bless your little heart" I think I heard Patsy Cline in the background singing "I fall to pieces"
I got a kick in the follow up vid where their new to them 80K trailer just nose dived on the truck bed rails making a U shape in their truck bed and tailgate and they're rushing in to check their cheap glassware
It will be interesting to see what happens next: they just bought the 5th wheel hours before.............wonder if they notified their insurance company..........then imagine calling back a few hours later to notify them of a upcoming claim.........Well, Bless their little hearts!

For those that know structural engineering better would there be possible damage to the frame of the 5th wheel? It's what you can't see that can be damaged the most at times. What about frame and suspension damage to their truck?
What is amazing(not really) Tom has had a 5th wheel for seven years. You would think he would be listening for that "snap" of the jaws locking. That Columbus sitting to the side is their old one for sale..........well, maybe not now

At 19:45 in the video you can clearly see that he has high hitched it. A lot of air between the 5th wheel platform and the pin plate.

Looks to me like he high hitched it. I let my trailer sit an inch or two lower than the hitch so it will ride up into the saddle. Since doing it that way, I've never missed locking the pin properly. Of course, I visually check the jaws and do a pull test before leaving.

Yeah if you pause it at that time and zoom in it looks like you can see the shiny pin isn’t locked in behind the jaws completely. He should know to always come in a bit low with the trailer and let pressure settle the pin in and always do a test pull. That’s why my golden rule is to get out of my workspace and don’t talk to me when I’m hitching or unhitching. Distractions lead to mistakes, especially hamming it up for a camera.
I love the part where she’s adamantly blaming the hitch and the white pin for the failure “If the white pin is out it’s hitched!! It says so right here!!”.. He calls the factory, and the previous hitch owner looking for a place to lay blame instead of realizing he messed up. How about you got distracted, you didn’t hitch up correctly, and you didn’t test pull with gear down. Any of those easy steps would have prevented this.

Expensive mistake. Two things come to mind; 1. No distractions when hooking up your trailer, like making videos; 2. When in doubt read the owner's manual, whether it be the paper copy or one obtained online.

Why in heavens name didn't he get the previous hitch owner to walk him through the proper way to hook up his trailer? Why would you spend an enormous amount of money on a new truck and new trailer and the skimp by buying a used hitch?? Dumb, dumb, dumb!!

They crack me up..........."do as I say, not as I do" Should have been a school teacher: "some teach.....others do"
Considering their track record I really don't think they're in the position to give advice.
His eyes tell me there might be other contributing "influences"

This guy is a total tool of a bonehead. I think he's smoking too much of the devil's lettuce. Why is it you can afford a $100k+ coach and you buy a pos used hitch?? Then to add insult to injury, the one and only thing that hitch has going for it is the head has already been outfitted with a friction plate on it. This moron puts his white, round one on it. I knew right then this was gonna go bad REALLY fast.
I hope for the sake of all mankind he can't have kids.

This was the same couple that he had to drive to California for work and left his car out in the street of a hotel to avoid paying a $20 parking fee and his car was broken into and he lost $$$$ of computers and video equipment !

Between his appearance and insipid laugh he answers the question: What ever happened to Butthead?
