Talking Oprah Winfrey pop-up camping at Yosimite NP

FYI, everyone. On Friday of this past week the Oprah Winfrey show featured Oprah and her best friend Gayle camping in a pop-up at Yosemite NP. It was a hoot. The final installment will be this coming Wednesday, November 3.

A black park ranger at Yosemite wrote Oprah and asked her to promote camping in national parks to black Americans. Oprah decided to surprise the ranger by showing up herself with her friend Gayle. Neither had ever camped before, so you can imagine their struggles with getting the pop-up parked (Oprah ran the trailer into/over a rock while driving to the campsite) and set up. My wife and I laughed our heads off for the entire first episode which aired last Friday.

Try to catch the last half of the camping trip on November 3 or perhaps have someone tape it for you. Should be entertaining!

Another thought about national parks. Ken Burns has made a fabulous documentary on our national parks for NPR. It is available for sale on-line at NPR.

Oprah Oprah Oprah

We too had a good laugh. Now to her credit it was a pop-up which I haven't stayed in, and my new RV is fully loaded - no hassle there...but it's cute to see such "city girls" have to make-do....It reminded me of an episode of No Reservations in which Anthony Bourdain took a trip out to Portland, at some point he had to go camping....here's a guy who's an excellent chef, world traveler, couldn't pitch a tent to save himself.....but then again I'm sure they could put me to task with things I would be completely goofy at.
I hope Oprah and Gayle continue their camping adventures, maybe next time a Jayco RV?

Just a reminder to everyone that the second installment of Oprah's camping adventures will be broadcast tomorrow.

Saw the show Wednesday, what a hoot. Thanks for the heads-up. Wife and I really enjoyed it.
