Outside Storage Lot Options
So, I'm looking for a storage lot to store my new 27 BHS. I have a few options that I found and am looking for some experienced input on what others would use.
Storage A: $32/mo, 26 minutes away, dirt/gravel lot
Storage B: $42/mo, 21 minutes away, dirt/gravel lot, between home & work
Storage C: $55/mo, 12 minutes away, asphalt lot, between home & work
All are gated with passcode, 24-hr access.
Thanks.

That's cheap !!!
I have to pay 80 bucks a month !! My slip IS covered though. I park under a huge metal roof w/ 7 other rigs. At least the UV isn't abusing my rig, and its not really getting rained on a whole lot save wind blown.

I would pay $80 if it was covered like that. These are all wide open.

Wow, I pay $115 for a Gravel space. I would vote for the paved spot. The gravel is a very dusty place in the summer and muddy when it rains a lot....

I would go for the closest location. There are plenty of times we have needed stuff from the trailer or wanted to go check it. 12min seems like a long way away to me, but the other two would be out of the question. With 12min location, that's almost 30min round trip. The other two are almost an hour round trip. You can go cheap to see how it works, then make your decision to see if it works for you.

There are some other factors to consider:
1) Critters. Sometimes the paved lots minimize rats, mice and chipmunks getting into the rig and eating wiring. But in any event I'd opt for a site away from woods, drainage ditches, etc.
2) Neighbors. I live in Atlanta - large urban area. There are a large number of landscape companies that are run by illegal aliens. They can't get a business location because they can't sign a lease - but they can get a few parking spaces in a storage lot by paying cash. So they park their landscape trucks and trailers there. In the early morning they come in, move the trucks, park their personal vehicles there and go work. Late in the day they come back. The constant moving of landscaping equipment in and out beat the heck out of my TT. In one month between two camping trips they pierced the aluminum skin twice (probably with rake or shovel handles sticking out) and broke a side window. I complained and asked to see the security video - but they claim it's only stored on a hard drive for 24 hours. And the storage lot sided with the landscape company and assured me the damage must have happened on my last camping trip - and in any event I couldn't prove otherwise. I moved my rig - but it cost me in repairs.
Look for a lot where they ONLY allow the storage of RVs and Boats - or at least where they segregate the lot.
Also watch security - Local storage facility here in Atlanta was on the news last month because their keypad access gate was broken for a few days. They weren't in any rush to fix it, or to put a guard on the lot while it was brokent. And while it was broken thieves broke into multiple units and loaded up a pickup truck - two nights in a row. A lot of these storage places are owned by an absentee owner/investor and the hired managers could care less.
3) And finally - don't park next to an industrial building. Many storage buildings sell parking spots around or next to their building. Those buildings frequently have flat tar roofs. I learned the hard way what happens when an RV is parked next to such a building after a few hard rains. You think black streaks are hard to remove - you ain't seen nothin.
Oh - and around here it's usually $85 to $100 a month for a paved lot.

I would be all over the closest spot at that price. We pay $126 30 min away. If we want it any closer we are looking at over $200/month!!
Never stored on gravel but heard it's dusty. Plus I think you may need to put wood under your tires.

I think it depends on where you are. We will pay $100 for winter storage and a small fee if we want to work on it inside in a heated space

Lots of talk about what others are paying.
Without seeing them, I would consider the lot between home and work for convenience. You can stop be periodically to check on it. Easy to grab it after work.

Yes, that's a good point. Even though our storage is 30 min away it is near my husband's work so he checks on it regularly. Only a pain when it's time to pick it up for a campout or drop it off afterwards because it is a 2 person job and we like to have it home at least the day before we go. He is getting much better maneuvering it so hopefully I will not have to keep going with to pick it up or return it.

So last post was mine, haha. Just had to share that I'm super excited that our name came up on a waiting list after almost a year. New spot 15 min away instead of 30, has a dump which other one didn't, and price increase was only $14/month. 🎉

So my question is: if you have to pay that much each month for storage couldn't you build a covered storage at home and save? Plus increase resale for the house?

Not with a home owner's association. When we move out of state it will be a requirement to have a big piece of property and be able to store at home.

In our County you can't park an RV (or truck or any large vehicle) in front of or beside the house. So you have to have room to have a driveway and parking space behind the house. In most urban, suburb type lots that's just not gonna happen.
But at the end of the summer I'm starting construction on my retirement home, on lake lots I own. Plenty of room and I've already talked to the builder about a 16 X 35 X 12 ft High detached RV garage. I can recoup the cost of construction in just over 2 years of storage fees. And I'll have full hookups and can use the RV as a second guest bedroom. Well worth it.

Convenience should be a consideration in my book. I keep my camper in an indoor storage about five miles from two lakes where we like to camp. Makes it real simple to pick it up and drop it off.
The downside is that it's about 65 miles from the house. It's not normally a problem, but over Memorial Day we went camping about 130 miles the other direction. The weekend before, we grabbed a three of the grandkids and took a ride to get it and bring it home.
Coming home after the weekend was another story. Two-hour trip turned in to about five hours.

We pay $50, it's at the dealer. Call the day before and they bring the camper up front for easy hookup, done with the camper drop it out front and they park it, still 24hr access to the camper. Need service work done or the roof sealant checked, give them a call. Works out well. Only thing I would like even better is if it was covered storage.
