Pet Restrictions
I plan on getting a dog when I retire and plan on taking it just about everywhere with me. I'm not a small dog person and would like a German Shepard, Doberman Pinscher or a Terrier that might resemble a "Pit Bull". Has anyone experienced an RV park that restricts any of these breeds? It may sound like I'm asking for trouble by wanting one of these breeds but when raised by a "normal" person they are excellent dogs.

Get a campground book, like a Woodalls, or Good Sam Guide. All the parks and campgrounds they review and rate will have a note about breed or quantity restrictions. Keep in mind, they don't get to every campground, but they rate a ton of them. Best way is call the place you're wanting to stop at, and ask them on the phone before reserving a spot. We have a Corgi, and never have any problems, yet, and he can be mouthy!

Many have restrictions for dogs over 35 pounds and some are restricting certain breeds like Doberman, Shepard and Pit Bulls. A friend has wintered in FL for many years with his 2 well behaved Dobs. Never a problem but season before last, he was told the insurance now prevents them from being there with the dogs.

Dogs and insurance
The breeds you mentioned are certainly on the list of 'higher risk' breeds. But many get a bad rap - if raised properly. Unfortunately the reputation continues negative overall. Suggest you check with your own insurance company on the coverage (or liability exposure from lack of coverage) you can obtain for certain breeds. There are many other 'larger' breeds that have good reputations, and also, please consider rescuing a dog from the many needing a new home. I rescued a beautiful 55# English Setter eight years ago, and she has been my constant companion (usually with my wife's little cocker spaniel) traveling the country, and spending 7-8 weeks aboard a sailboat each summer. Traveling with pets is an extra burden / responsibility versus no pets, but certainly worth the pleasure they bring. Also you have to consider the 'pet entry restrictions' from many parks and attractions, and plan on how you are going to accommodate their care. Best of luck.

It seems to me that more and more parks are pushing certain dog breeds as not being welcomed at their park. We are not small dog owners, we have had German Shepard since we came back from Germany. I agree with others that it depends on how the dog was raised. What makes me mad is when you ask the management why certain breed are not allowed all we get told is Insurance said so.

We have a lab that we believe is mixed with rottweiller. She is the sweetest dog we've ever owned. If we told a rv park that we had a rottweiller, we would probably be told no, so we always say we have a lab mix. Never had a problem. Pit bulls, dobermans, shepards and others get a bad rap because of the way some are raised. If you raise a dog right (any dog), it will be a great companion.

Parcany, don't be mad if owners use the "insurance " excuse; it's most probably true. Many homeowners insurance companies are actually refusing to cover homes where certain breeds are present. Some cities e.g. Montreal, have banned them all together (pit bulls). I've been an owner (Golden Retrivers) my entire adult life and certainly don't agree with the bans, but it's another case of a few bad apple's behavior affecting the the majority.
I'm as bothered by the owners of dogs that allow their dogs bark or tip incessantly regardless of the time or day.

Our rescued and physically challenged GSD goes with us whenever we take the TT on an adventure. We have only come across a couple parks that would not allow the breed. When we call to make a reservation at an RV park, we always ask if German shepherds are ok. For us, it's really a non-issue. If the park won't allow his breed, then we simply won't be spending our money there and we move on. What ever breed you decide upon, please think of a rescue dog. They really are wonderful! Have fun and keep us posted on what dog you adopt.

I would suggest a mix if you want to avoid problems at some parks. My Tunce ( Rott) gets the stink eye from time to time about 5% not allowed under and conditions period. A lab mix will give you more freedom at parks but by all means I would stay away from pits as you'll find most people just don't want them around their kids or dogs.

"Insurance said so" is a code word for the owners were too cheap to get a rider on their insurance policy covering dog liability. I have separate liability coverage for my dogs on my home owners policy, was an extra 20 bucks a year.

I have yet to run into any issues with a ban on a dog! However, we have a neighboring county that has county parks that allow camping, they do not allow dogs of any type. You can bring any other animal to the park, but dogs!
I will not patron those parks.

My doberman goes everywhere I go. If a place does not allow Khan I don't want to go anyway is how I see it.

That's how I feel but to answer his question there are times when traveling you might not make reservations in advance and its later in the day and being turned away when your tired and hungry is not a good thing, ben there done that.

We travel with two English Cocker spaniels. We have never had a problem with getting a spot for the night, but they are certainly not breeds people seem to worry about. When I make reservations I am careful to look for pet restrictions, and usually it just means keep them on a short leash and make sure they are quiet. I have never had a place that said "No Dogs."

I will not leave my dog out of my life because a CG said I can't bring her. I'll avoid them and go somewhere they're welcome. Remember.. they might only be here for a part of your life, but for them, you are their whole life.

We take our Shepherd with us on every trip. We have had very few places that wouldn't allow her as they deemed her an "Aggressive Breed" As others have stated i always ask when making the reservation.

Just say "Lab Mix"
We traveled across the country last summer with all three of our dogs. Two of them are Rottweiler/Boxer Mixes a male and female from the same litter of pups. They are older mature dogs (almost 9 years old) and our "pup" a Shepard/foxhound etc mix who's also a male. The male boxweiler is a 70lb baby, the female boxweiler (who's really small and petite) is 45 lbs. and the Shepard Mix who is now 2 years old is 85 lbs. We didn't have any issues at any parks we stayed at. We stayed at KOA's and Private "Mom and Pop" parks. Only two of them questioned what breeds they were when we called ahead for reservations. My reply was always.... lab mixes. At those parks we walked the dogs and one owner even commented on how well behaved they were....never once did their "breed" come into question.
So my reply is always "my dogs are lab mixes"

We really only have county or state campgrounds in this area. State Parks here don't allow any type of dog. County parks allow dogs and don't seem to have any breed restrictions.

If your going to experience problems with restricted breeds, the ones on your list are going to be a problem for you.
