Physics lesson for the day
Physics lesson today: Increase in elevation all day + nasty headwinds = Gas mileage that sucks.

Drive across Nebraska some time. Flat and straight but the wind will knock hell out of MPGs.

Next downhill lesson is brake friction makes heat (hopefully not too much), and your engine really revs in lower gears while getting great mpg!

I'm going to start considering MPG a four letter word. I thought my tenting days were over, but if gas prices go where I think they are headed ...

Years ago, DW and I were driving cross country to California from the DC area. Crossing the continental divide, the TV would only go 45 mph, pretty much gas pedal floored. We pulled over so I could investigate. I literally could not open the TV door because the wind was so strong!

I've had times when going North in the morning, and South later in the afternoon there is a head wind each way...why is that!!

Lol, I've driven across Nebraska a few times on I-80 and you're right. There can be no wind anywhere else in the country but as soon as you enter Nebraska, watch out.

Last April, the wind got so bad towing North on Hwy 14 near Mojave, we had to pull over & park 'head' pointed into wind for several hours.. Only reason we pulled over, we noticed all Truckers were pulling off the road and parking into the wind. The wife got on the weather listing on her phone and learned wind gust up to 60-70 MPH being report4d.. Not fun towing in the wind

I think I'd rather tow with a head wind than being hit broadside by it. We had that last weekend and it was no fun.

The Pan Handle is not easy on fuel. A tow through there is what landed me in a diesel years back to increase range and lower RPM’s.

Head winds are bad on mileage, cross winds are bad on nerves. I-25 between Fort Collins and Cheyenne can be no fun. Twice going over the Mackinac Bridge with 20 mph restricted traffic in 50 mph gusts. Hiding from the wind amongst the big trucks gave a little more confidence, but it's 15 minutes of white knuckles and one long breath.

Having the "Windy" app on your phone is great. The ability to look ahead and see what the wind is helps in planning.

Lived and worked there for 20 years, have seen MANY RV's on their side because they didn't do what you did!
