Look for observatories near your destination.

Most have public facilities that show the telescope view on a large screen in real time. It's very entertaining even for the adults!

We head north early August every summer to catch the Perseid meteor showers and northern lights if we get lucky on the northern shore of Lake Michigan. There is a Dark Sky Park on the beach and the sky is so black due to its remote location and no city light pollution. We sit for hours well after midnight and see 100s of shooting stars and small comets across the sky, and if the sun is having solar flares the northern lights dance across the sky.

Think you mean astronomer.

You should check out Lowell Observatory above downtown Flagstaff. Excellent exhibits with access to telescopes, including the 24 inch Clark Telescope.

Many state and National Parks offer star nights. Sunset Crater National Monument, 20 miles north of Flagstaff and Walnut Canyon NM, about 5 miles east of town on I-40 have both rangers and the local astronomy club set up telescopes once a month if I remember correctly.

Georgia state parks also offers star night programs.

Check out state and national parks for their programs.

BTW, ifallsguy:

If Tiften is the gnat capital of the world, Charleston, SC is the close runner up!
