Price negotiation

I understand every dealer is different, but is there an average percentage that you can expect to get them to go down on the price? We have bought and negotiated cars, but new to the TT world. When paying in cash do you immediately process a certain amount off in your mind ~ then negotiate that?

We would like to walk in one step ahead, so I appreciate opinions/advice.

I started out by getting pricing from RV Direct and used that as a basis to get pricing from my dealer.

BTW, I might add I also used Indiana RV Connection, They are located in Middlebury Indiana, the same as where the Jayco factory is. I don't know if they are a "factory outlet or not, but I also got very good pricing from them as well.

If doing cash no trade expect price to drop a lot depending on year and model.

I bought mine at Keystone RV in Greencastle PA. which is not far from you. I got my brand new 2014 X17a for 13500 which was 600 less than quotes from Indiana.

When I called them about the unit,willing to pay the advertised price of 14000, she said she would go and she if she could do better for me. I didnt even ask.

I saved over 6000 from buying it locally.

We are looking at a x254. I just realized this is a new model, so I don't have a whole lot of comparison to use other than out of state prices. A local place has it lowered to 22,900 and that is $100 cheaper than what I can find online so far (out of state).

Check tax rates if buying out of state you might not be saving anything when u do that.

taxes would only be paid in your home state where the trailer is registered

This may work for some trailers but I would expect more on others. I bought mine the first of June and the MSRP was 20300 and I bought it for 13500 plus my dealer (Keystone RV Mega Center) didnt charge anything for PDI, DOC. Other than tire levy and temp tag I was out the door for 13526.

I also bought mine from Keystone RV in Greencastle PA. They are about a 2hr drive for me but it was worth it. And like nbhbryid said you only pay your home state tax. So no penalty for buying out of state.

I'll 3rd this. Drove 2hrs even though there was a Jayco dealer 20 minutes from my house. Their deals are hard to beat. Local Dealer couldn't even come close. They are great to work with! We got our 2013 Jay Flight 26bh for around 15000 out the door fully loaded. Jayco's suggested MRSP was around 25000 and RV direct was around 20000. We have not had any major issue with our trailer and have camped in it 43 nights since we bought it (not including driveway camping.

So do you apply similar negotiations when you use a dealership to build one? We don't have a Jayco RV place around here, so I don't know if this will be an option. Just wondering. Thanks!

You should research both the states where the TT will be registered and purchased. Although many states do have an agreement that sales tax will be paid in the home state, I believe that not all states have the same arrangement. I have heard stories where the purchase state is lower taxes, which you have to pay and the make up the difference when you go to register in your home state. In those cases I understand the if the purchase state collected taxes and the registered state has lower taxes you are out the difference.

I'm sure a quick call to the motor vehicle department will help clarify.

Otherwise I agree that 25-30% is the typical discount off MSRP. Delivery fee isn't part of the MSRP, but I understand that typical actual fee paid for delivery averages about a $1.30 a mile.

I would call Keystone RV 1 800 232-3279. I purchased my unit from Rebecca. They will give you the best price upfront without any worries. They are only 6 hours from you. Short drive. The great thing is they do not charge freight,Doc, Dealer prep...their bill of sale is straight forward and to the point. Very honest dealership IMO.

Plus I know they will not charge you PA sales tax

When I purchased our Jayco, I found what I wanted through internet searches. There were no local dealerships that had the unit we had in mind so I did my negotiations over the phone. I asked them to email a copy of the MSRP (if it wasn't listed on their website). The MSRP shows all the options listed on the unit so it's "kosher" to ask for that information. I didn't say that I was going to pay cash because dealerships make money on financing programs. So I just didn't say one way or the other. My goal was to purchase at least 30% off the MSRP so I started negotiations at 35% off. I ended up getting a bit more than 30% off because it was at the end of the model year. I had to drive 300 miles to close the deal (so that cost me fuel and one night in a hotel) but I was satisfied with "the deal". I have it serviced through a local Jayco dealer with no hassles. Sales tax was paid to my state when I purchased the license plate and registered the RV. Good luck and happy camping

I just asked about this question last week. If you buy out of your home state, you pay the sales tax where you purchase. If your home sales tax is higher at home, you'll pay the difference. If it's lower, I'm not sure your home state would not write a check to you.

I did research and I paid MD sales tax to the out of state dealer. I'm speaking first hand not stories. Obviously a buyer should do their do diligence and know the total cost from wherever they buy. I also paid didn't pay freight or setup and my propane tanks where full. Have a great day....
