Champion makes a 3400 watt unit (peak at 4000) that is a hybrid unit. It's actually an inverter unit in a traditional frame. It's half the price of the invert unit.

thank you
as always, thank you for every ones input. I always felt comfortable with costcos return policy but looks like everyone is more than satisfied and confidant with amazons return policy. I appreciate all the help!

Well the good news is that you have some great options. Honda & Yamaha are the industry standards are are great units. Time and some healthy competition have benefited us all and the Champion (plus others) are producing some solid units.
We went with the champion 3100/2800 inverter with the remote start and did go with Amazon. I would have used Costco but, at the time at least, they didn't offer the remote start model. We paid $750 back in December. Today it's $625 and free shipping for prime - an amazing value:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The unit came with a broken hinge bracket and I immediately had the sinking feeling of having to go through the hassle of returning it. The box wasn't damaged so I couldn't blame Amazon or UPS. I called Champion the next day and they handled it very well. They shipped me a new bracket and as I inquired about a second remote, sent me one of those all within two days. No charge for the remote as they said that they were sorry for the inconvenience. That's what I call customer service.
The manual is outstanding and getting it up and running and broken in is very easy. We did add an hour meter so that we know when to take care of the maintenance:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Since we plan on "Ultron" being with us for a very long time we bought the cover too:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The unit is not loud. Louder than the Yamaha & Honda - a bit. Certainly not as loud as two 2K Honda's in parallel however! You can have a conversation while standing right next to it without a problem. If I have the room I'll keep it cabled and locked in the bed of the truck, I'll nose the truck close to on the drivers side perpendicular to the TT. I'm nosed in to the slides facing the power cord. This way the power cord coming from the TT will reach all the way to the generator. Both the noise and the exhaust are pointing away from the TT and the truck is also a barrier to the sound.
It does weigh about 100lbs full of gas and oil but two of us can handle it up or out of the bed of the truck very easily.
Sorry I've gone on so long here but, as you can tell, I'm very happy with our decisions.
It's hard to go wrong out there. Best of luck with your decision.
Jeff

Just watch to make sure Amazon does not charge you shipping on top of the purchase price.. sometimes they do that with heavy items.

Not if you are a prime member. Brought the Champion 3100w with remote start today from Amazon for $610 with free shipping. Had the wife by another (they limit you to 1) and the parallel kit.

I am waiting on the dual fuel to come down to maybe $599 (currently $999 cheapest I see). Seems like that would be a good option to run on propane. Champion looks like they're catching up with the elusive Honda that I can't bring myself to spend $1000 on lol.

Got ours last night for $595.00 as well + free shipping. I had placed it in my amazon app cart on my iPhone and then noticed the price jumped to $841. I was still able to check out and get it for the lower price. Woo-Who!!!

Well I got it this past week and finally got to test it out tonight. Filled it with oil, filled it with fuel, hooked up the battery and away it went. Started with my saw and it went fine so then hooked up to the RV. Turned on the 15,000 btu AC and it idled up and ran fine. I don't do things half a*& so then had to turn on the 2nd AC. flashed "overload" and didn't put out any more power but kept working. Turned it off and restarted it and ran 1 AC, Television and refer. I am extreeeeeeemly pleased with the low noise level and the price we got it for!!
HIGHLY recommend this unit for anyone looking at getting a generator especially the Champion 3100.

Thanks for pointing out the hybrid! The power is clean, less than 3% total harmonic distortion compared to less than 5% for the 3100 inverter models. At only 82 pounds, it's lighter than most full Yeti hard side coolers! It's a better solution for us than stacking 2 2000i generators. Plus, it can function as a backup for our home too.
Just ordered from Amazon $519.63

I was working at a job this weekend doing a 24 hour test and had to take samples and perform lab tests every 1/2 hour. Going outside to get the samples in the middle of the night has always been a chore until I took the new generator to the site. I just hit the remote button and the gen started, 2 seconds later the lights came on and out I went to get the samples. Came back in and hit the remote again and off everything went. Worked everytime, was quite and just so awesome having that remote. So glad we got the Champion with the remote!!

price of champion generator costco vs amazon
I finally bit the bullet and bought a 3400 dual fuel champion inverter generator from Amazon. Should get here next week. Where do you keep yours while driving? Bumper mounted rack or bed of the TV? I originally was going to mount on a rack behind the fifth wheel and plug it in while towing since the shore power connection is in the rear, but I'm nervous about it bouncing around and falling off. The receiver is only rated for 300 pounds so I'd be way under that but still makes me nervous.
My other thought was to add a second shore power connection by the front basement and connect it to a transfer switch. That way I could have the genny in the bed to power the rig. Also I can power up from either end without worry of having an open hot connection. Thoughts?
Or, I could just get a 50' extension cord?
