Propane Level

Does anyone use a propane tank gauge to check the level of propane, and do they work?'

I never have used one.
I do however take a big super hot class/cup of water out to the tank & proceed to make a narrow stream down one side. The gas will absorb the heat and make the side of the tank stay cold. Where there is no gas there is nothing to absorb the heat so that part of the tank stays hot.

I dont recommend one (like in your link) for a TT. Most of them read "full" until the tank is almost completely empty - not much of a warning. The best bet is to find a tank with an actual "float" gauge. They are available at Sams Club in 20# tank sizes for a very reasonable price.

If you pick the tank up and it's really heavy, you have lots of gas in it. If you pick it up and it's really light, it's probably running low. THat's honestly the best way I've learned to measure. And it's free!

Tried one once and like others he said it will just show you when a tank is empty which is probably too late. Not reliable at all.

I had one also and thought it was the greatest thing, until I discovered it was leaking and drained my tank overnight. The last thing you need is that kind of safety concern so if you do get one, be sure to squirt some soapy water on it after installation to make sure it's not bleeding your tank out.

Thanks for the replies, just looking for a way to check the level without having to disconnect the tanks.

I use hot water as mentioned above. Not the most accurate but works well enough. I also only open one tank at a time do if it does run out I have the other as a back up.
