Propane tank Question

I just concerted me hybrid from single tank to double tank system. Now we are looking into purchasing or renting propane bottles. Can I have a campground fill a rented bottle. Is there a place to purchase two new bottles. We are going with 20 lb bottles due to my health 30 lb are just to heavy. Nam help out there? I know nothing about rent a bottle.

Any home centers have the cage to buy/swap propane tanks

Some campgrounds fill them...some don't...so can't answer any specific for your trip

Home Depot, Lowes, Tractor Supply, Menards and Amazon all sell new 20 lb bottles.

Might be best to purchase a couple of 20 pounders from somewhere nationwide like Walmart or many other places. I didn't know you could rent one. Purchase one and you can swap it in or get it refilled at a lot of places.

I don't know if renting two bottles would work. If I am at a KOA will they fill one bottle? Do I have to stick with swap out rental. Sometimes we are miles away from Homedepot.

U-Haul carries (sells) empties (20 lb) for about $50.00, you can get them filled on site at the bigger facilities, Tractor Supply will also fill bottles and it's cheaper than swapping.

The deposit for two bottles is a little more than purchasing it from Wal-Mart. This was a very easy conversion. I like the new regulator that is auto change. My Jayco is a 2007 and the gas lines were hard so this had to be replaced. It was not cheap but jayco maybe me remove the spare tire. Get under the tank. Get a wrench and socket on the two bolts securing the tank. This was not very easy to do. What was jayco thinking?

Impossible to hypothetically ask or answer based on a fictitious KOA location

If they have propane they will fill it...if not..then no

A tank of propane should last 1-2 weeks or more

Why worry so much.... travel and have fun

I have never heard of renting a 20lb propane bottle. If I were making the decision, I would go to Walmart and get 2 filled certified bottles. Use them and just get it refilled at a hardware store or campground as one becomes empty.

Don't get to obsessed about it. Depending on the weather and your usage, it is not something you will be doing all the time.

Just check your change over regulator and when it empties and switches over, operate the manual lever to the full tank , remove and get the empty refilled.

I converted to 20 lb tanks years ago for the same reasons as you. In warm weather, we often go over a month on the same 20lb tank.

I've seen them free on Craigslist. Even if it's the old valve type that can't be used anymore, you can swap it out at a tank exchange place like Blue Rhino, and get yourself a current full tank that way.

Most of the bottle swaps around here are filled with pnly 15 lbs. I get my blue rhino tanks filled at a local landscape supply or farm supply with the full 20lbs.

Same here. I don't use the tank swaps to refill -

The point I was trying to emphasize more was that Blue Rhino is a convenient and cheap way to upgrade an old unusable tank.

Unless the clerk has some idea of what they're doing. I've been refused before because the tank had the old style valve. I'm guessing the store outlet gets to "eat" the cost of the valve replacement?

We like to fill our tanks at the campground. It seems easy to remove it and they fill it on the spot. I don't know if KOA fills rented bottles. Also I like when KOA fills the bottle.

I still do not understand the term, "Rented Bottles". I have never seen a LP re-filler refuse to fill a tank except if it is out of date and they will re-certify it for a small fee.

The op stated he did not have any 20 lb tanks. Why buy a new ones when the least expensive way to get 2 would be to get them at a exchange and pay for them filled, even if only 15 lb. and pay the extra cost.

Seems like this is really getting over complicated to me.

This style tank holder would eliminate needing to get under to unbolt the tanks. One wing nut on top to release them.

I don't swap my 20 pounders that I use at home. I bought them and refill them at my local hardware store. I prefer to own my own tanks as the swapped ones are sometimes questionable as to condition or even quantity of gas. My 30 pound rv tanks are the same. I fill them as needed and only pay for the gas used. I have never had to refill at a campground.

I suspect where the confusion originated from is that propane distribution companies do rent propane tanks, but those are large tanks commonly used for houses in rural areas. ~CA
