Question about buying a Jayco without a title in another state

Heres the deal, after living in our '99 Eagle 242 last summer/fall, my wife said camping in that unit would never be the same. So it got me looking. We are heading to KY in a little over a month for a mission trip and I happend to find what seems to be a pretty good deal on a slightly newer Jayco Eagle (I thinks its an 03) just a couple feet longer but has a large slide out, and its only a couple hours from where we will be. The ad states that they bought the camper a few years ago with bent axles and replaced both of them with new. It still has a little damage to the sheet metal near the wheel wells but the camper is perfactly useable. The ad also states that they do not have a title and said that KY does not require one, so if it stays in KY it should be fine. Being that I live in Michigan, I would need to have proof of ownership to get plates for it.
My question is, has anyone bought a camper without a title and how much of a pain is it to get one? Anyway, Im not 100% sold on this camper, but the price seems right, just looking for some insight before I go any farther. Thanks! Dave

IMO known damage and no title = pass

Without a title I don't know how you can transfer registration yo another state, but more importantly how do you prove you own it.

You can call this number and get factual information about whether you can title it or not.

Or whether the previous owner owned it. It would be terrible to buy a trailer with no title, take it to have it re-titled only to find that it was stolen. It happened to an ex-client with a boat. They bought it because it was the "right price", went to have it registered, VIN search revealed it was stolen. Boat was returned to the rightful owner with no remuneration to the second "buyer".

I would steer well clear of anything without a title.

My guess is if they bought it with bent axles and damaged sheet metal it was totaled. My 26 Model T did not have a title. I now have a court issued title. I had to put up a bond (for 3 years??). If no one comes forwards proving they are the owner the vehicle was officially mine, in the eyes of the courts. The title states it is a court issued title. So it is doable to get it registered. What I would do is contact the seller ask for the VIN number, then call your DMV, ask to have the VIN number searched to verify that it is not stolen, and what it takes to register an out of state vehicle with no title.

Best of Luck

That is very risky, no title means that likely it is stolen. The other possibility is if it was totaled and the seller doesn't want to disclose it by providing a branded title.

Yep, something smells fishy with no title. Even with a damaged one I assume there should be a salvage title....

I don't see why no title is a big deal. Various terms apply to salvaged vehicles or home builts. Years ago I bought a small home made utility trailer in Colorado, and with a bill of sale, got a VIN and title in Maryland. With or without a title, Colorado requires a VIN inspection before it will issue a registration for any vehicle brough in from another state.

OTOH, the world is full of campers needing a good home! Keep searching. If you do buy this camper, don't pay more than you are willing to lose, plus disposal fees. Or just take your dough to a rolling craps game. Chances of coming out ahead are about the same.

The axel probably got bent as they went screaming down the back road , chased by the PD, when they stole it.

There are far too many trailers available on the market to take chances with a non-titled one. I'd take a pass and keep looking.

x2 yep this is the case. Someone probably purchased the "savage rights" to the unit.

Thanks for all the replies! I haven't gone any farther on that unit. Although it seems like a good deal to me, it does appear that campers are selling for less in the south than what they sell for around my area, and that is how I found that one.
My wife and I dont borrow money for anything (except the house) as we are pretty big Dave Ramsey fans, and would be paying cash for whatever we buy. That being said, I am always looking for a deal. It seems that acording to NADA our 242FK would bring about 5K in my area, so if I could upgrade to something a bit bigger with a slide for only a few hundred bucks would be awsome. There just doesn't seem to be anything like that in our area in that price range. I will keep looking and maybe something else will pop up in KY soon in our price range or maybe we will just keep what we have for another year or two.
Thanks again for all the advice!! Dave

Like others said RUN RUN RUN. At the bare minimum have them apply for a lost title and do all the foot work from their end. If they can then come up with one it only solves one problem. To many questions that indicate that it is time toput your Nike's on and RUN from this deal.
