I pretty much do the speed limit. I always replace my factory tires with higher weight limits as the ones from the factory are pretty much maxed out. I'm now at 5000 pounds plus in extra weight capacity. When on IH 10 west of San Antonio the speed limit is 85. I get my best fuel economy running 82 MPH at 1950 RPM. Its the magical max torque to HP to load for me. At 70 I get 10-11 mpg..at 82 I get 13.4... I know it's crazy.

One other thing to mention... Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but unlike a car or truck, you should always keep your tires at the max inflation listed on the sidewall.

We have been told by our good year dealer that RV tires are only rated for 65 mph unless they are on a motor home

Thanks. I'll check with my better half to see if this is what he's been doing.

You know, as a young whippersnapper many years ago, I just wanted to go as fast as I could. But as the years passed, I learned more and more about all the things I speeded right by and never noticed. It took a while, but now I enjoy the trip, smell the roses and view the sights along the way, and really don't care whether I arrive at the campground at 3:00 or 3:10, or even 4:00, if you get my drift. My speed is 55-65, and many times we have spotted something interesting to stop and see, that we would probably not have noticed at 70 or above. Secondary roads are also much more enjoyable than the interstates, where all you see are trees and trucks. Bottom line - the camping experience starts when we leave home, and doesn't end until the rig is parked back at home.

Your ST trailer tires are still only rated for 65 mph. Have you thought about that extra 2.5 tons if you have to nail the brakes in an emergency?

We avoid interstates when possible. NEVER use IH 35 from Dallas to San Antonio, unless its between the hours of midnight to 6AM. I drive 50 miles out of the way to avoid but my attitude is 1000 percent better, and I think my drive time is shorter. IH 10 west of SA is great and scenic. Avoid IH 10 between Beaumont and west of Houston. If I have to go thru Atlanta ...I'll boondock until midnight..drive thru then , after about two hours, boondock on the other side. We will only stay at Walmart, Home Depot or lowes in these areas though. We had a great trip on the Natches trace trail. Lots of great state and private parks.

We don't have interstates here. Just a highway in the middle of the land. And it was pitch black outside so nothing to see. Again, I'm not sure where anyone was getting that we wanted to rush, I was only checking if we could go the speed limit on the road as I didn't know what the speed rating were on the tires and it's standard here to go the speed limit as it saves others from passing you and driving into the lane with traffic coming the other way.

I was just a little shocked that trailer tires weren't rated to speed limits in Canada since passenger tires are rated well over so I never expected there to be tires rated that much lower. Seems odd to be travelling that close the max speed most of the time without a large safety margin built in.

Our PUP trailers must have been the same but we only travelled on max 100 kph roads when we had it.

We know now anyway and also. We did have the tires at 65 psi. My husband followed the stickers on the side of the trailer for the tire pressure and it says 65.

I'm not carrying an extra 2.5 tons, I just have that much extra carrying capacity.
So my tires are staying cool compared to hot when maxed out.

One thing not mentioned in this discussion is the towing speed limit in each state. In most states the towing speed limit for ALL towing vehicles is the truck speed limit which is seldom over 65 mph and in some states it is even slower.

I don't believe truck/towing speed limits are common in Canada. Ontario and Quebec may have truck speed limits (and I don't think it applies to towing) but not the rest of Canada as far as I know.

I remember trying to balance some 10 ply tires to high speed way back when. They would not balance at high speed and if they did they would have been out of balance at lower speeds.......There are dynamic issues with tires designed to hold weight. I have this picture in my head of one of my tires in a blur of bouncing down the road........65 is all my ST's will ever see.

+1 They did away with the specific truck speed limit in most areas of Texas, what... 10 years ago? Maybe more?

Anyway, no more separate speed limit except in certain areas where posted.

Yes, I was in the tire business when bias ply was the norm and then belted and then radial all came along.

Tires have come a long way. The stock factory tires and wheels were made in china...the ones I replaced them with came out of the same factory.

None of the factory tires are balanced and none of the replacements are either.
Running yesterday my wife followed and checked. At all speeds they never bounced and I ran up to 80 mph. Cruised at 75. Smooth.

HA! and people accuse me of being a hazard because I don't shut off my fridge when I refuel my truck. You definitely have me covered in the hazard department.

What I found is that when I come up on a bottle neck, which causes wrecks lots of times, that it's either a group of Mecicans towing a line of cars etc to Mexico or someone pulling a uhaul with a small car or majority of the time it a slow RVer.
IMHO I think it's safer for me to go with the flow.
Everyone to whatever they think is better though.

How fast do you want to get to heaven or the other place? Just my feeble attempt at humor- Seriously, st tires are rated at 60 to 62 # - However, consider how fast those small wheels and tires are turning- My experiences with that configuration are not something I would wish on anyone- JMHO- DD
