Rant - What is with no wall fan switch in washrooms these days?

Just have to post a rant... we have been searching for a new trailer for onwards of a month now. Driven all over the southern half of the province, one RV show and far too much surfing the net.

However we have found one common theme in almost all of the “family” trailers (bunks/quad bunks/etc) that are 2017/2018....

THERE IS NO WALL SWITCH FOR THE OVERHEAD FAN IN THE BATHROOM?!?!?!

Should you “need” to turn on a fan you have to stand up and if vertically challenged like us, use a stool or stand on your tippy toes and flick the switch on the roof fan in the roof.

Forgot if you have children, no hope of them ever reaching that switch.

So what the devil is going on with this? Thankfully the Whitehawk 29BH that we are looking at has the fan switch still but a TON of the other Jayflights and other brands did not have it.

Find that very strange on a “family” trailer...

Rant off ... lol.

Cheers
Tim

We have a wall switch on our '18 377 Nother Point, but I certainly can understand the frustration.

Who knows . . . RVs I guess. You are right. It makes no sense. Buy one with one or install one yourself. Being a self-installer is part of the RV owner's job description.

We have a wall switch in our Feather. Our problem is with the pointless, sorry fan Jayco and other use, and we do not understand the lack of ventilation in the front half of the coach. Ours is at the very rear in the bath. Next time, we will look for a unit with both ends of the coach vented and equipped with either Fantastic or MaxxAir fans. Maybe the industry will get it going as OE by the time we are back in the market. Many manufacturers are already heading in this direction.

Our Eagle has that wall switch. My fil was ranting about that same thing and I pointed out that it was on the wall behind the door on his Outback.

If the mfg's put everything available on the units, the after market business would be up in arms!

Its nothing new, my 2010 Jayco had no wall switch for the fan. Equally frustrating is no wall switch for the light above the masted bed. Have to reach over the bed and up to turn it on, a wall switch would be nice there.

This is where the folks at the Fantastic Fan Company would love to sell you a fan unit with a remote.

Our '12 has the switch and came standard with a Fantastic Fan. Love it. I was thinking about mounting another one in an existing front vent if I was confident about finding a power source.

The switch for the bathroom fan is in the hallway by the bathroom door on my 5th wheel. I use it all the time to aid the other roof mounted fan by cracking the door and turn it on as well... Having two fans pulling cool air through the trailer windows is great.

Concur with your rant. My new 2017 23RB does not have a wall switch for the overhead fan. My old 2012 Skyline Koala 21CS had a wall switch. Sometimes when using the bathroom, the exhaust is needs to be on. But when it's time to flush, the fan should be off. Now, I have to wait until all the flushing is finished, and I'm ready to leave before I cut the fan on.

Just another way to save a nickle, I guess.

Our '17 White Hawk 28 DSBH has the fan switch right next to the light switch. We also ordered the optional vent/fan that is located in the ceiling just in front of the TV. As soon as we brought the trailer home we swapped in a Fantastic Fan with remote and thermostat in place of the factory fan. Coach is well vented with this setup.

I use the handle of my brush to switch the fan on in the bathroom. I have to stand on tiptoes to reach the crank to open the vent but the brush handle is great for pushing the button on and off. I am 5’3”.

We have the same problem. There's a switch for the light, but we really would like one for the fan as well. I can reach the fan no problem, but DW has a hard time with it. In our old Starcraft hybrid, it wasn't a problem because the ceiling was lower, but in the Jayco, that few extra inches makes a big difference. What I did was get an extra long handle which makes it easier for her to crank the vent open, and she says she's okay with stretching to flick the switch on and off. It will have to do until I can figure out a way to retrofit a switch for the fan without tearing apart the walls.

Agreed. My ‘06 23B had one. My ‘13 26RLS does not.

I had that issue, and solved it by pulling the light switch at the wall and tapping the fan wiring into it, so the switch now turns both light and fan on. You can still turn off the fan at the ceiling if you want.

Our Hummingbird has two switches outside the bathroom, one for the light and the other for the fan.

My 2015 19RD was equipped with a single switch that powered both the light and the fan (if the fan was left on at the vent).

Removing the wall switch reveled 3 wires. Some experimentation and a voltmeter showed that the fan power feed was routed behind the existing switch.

I bought a triple-gang switch to replace the single:
1) The light
2) The fan
3) Added a low-key LED night light 6" off the floor.

Worst case, buy the RV you like and run a low-volts wire from the fan to the wall and add a reachable switch.

How does one run electric wire through the ceiling and down the interior wall between the bathroom and kitchen?

How did you fish the electric wire for the ceiling fan through the ceiling and down the wall to the light switch?
