Rapid City SD
Need some recommendations for a campground around Rapid City. We will be there around a week. We will be stopping there on the way to Alaska.
I have looked online and at the Good Sam campground book plenty of choices.
Need a basic comfortable safe campground that can be our base while we visit Mt Rushmore, Custer St. Park , crazy horse memorial, Sturgis, Deadwood. Have s jayco precept ur 29 pulling a Jeep Wrangler
It's just me,wife and dog. I know probably a lot of you have been to Rapid City and some great info.
Thanks for the help. Paul

Any of the state campgrounds in Custer State Park are best in my opinion. Like Stockade or Game Lodge. However, they are not full hookups, just electricity. Stockade is close to the southern hills sites and Custer. Deadwood is a little more than an hour away. You can try Pactola which is more central to the hills. If you need full hookups, maybe Hart Ranch close to Reptile Gardens south of Rapid, but I haven't been there.

Stayed at Pine Pine Campground over July 4th, 2015. Great place. Owners were very friendly. Sites are not paved. Do not rip you off for firewood or ice. Would stay there again.

I second hot pepper’s recommendation, we spent 10 nights at Big Pine this fall and found it very pleasant. Very tidy and more spacious than most CG’s. Owner (I assumed he was the owner) was in constant motion keeping things clean and in good repair. We visited the places you mention and suggest Devils Tower if you haven’t been. It’s on the edge of town and quiet but close enough to make visiting the restaurants easy. Lots of wildlife in the evenings and early mornings.

Stay somewhere in the hills, not Rapid. You'll be out of the way if you stay in Rapid. Rafter J Bar would be a good place for instance.

I agree with those who say to stay away from Rapid City. A little farther up the road is Spearfish and Chris Campground. Close to everything and a beautiful area. Lots to do and a really family friendly campground

We loved the Campground and the management at: Daysend Campground. Lots of space and located between all attractions.

If you plan to stay inside Yellowstone NP, you should get cracking on reserving a campground if you want one. They fill up fast, especially if you have over 30' equipment.
