By "fake granite", I'm assuming you mean Corian (or similar) solid surface. If that's the case, Corian is acrylic, which is a fairly soft plastic, and it doesn't take much to scratch it. But, it also doesn't take much to repair the scratches. You can sand the scratches out with an ultra-fine emery cloth or sanding sponge: 120 grit or finer. Sand the entire area with a circular motion until the scratches are gone -
do not use a belt sander or random orbital sander! After you've sanded the area, repeat the sanding with a
green Scotchbrite scrubber pad, then repeat with a white or pink Scotchbrite pad to polish the surface. That's what Corian fabricators do. It will make the top look brand new!
Do not do this on a laminate (Formica) countertop! Their color layer is only a thin sheet of paper, and you will sand right through it in no time.
