Replacing carpet in slide with vinyl flooring

With three dogs and four cats, the cheap carpet in our dining room slide was getting pretty grungy. It didn't even look great new. We successfully replaced it with decent vinyl click-together planks.

It took a day and a half at a casual work pace and just over $200. After pulling the carpet by prying off the baseboard trim and cutting around the edges, we used 1/4" plywood as a subfloor over the existing floor. The only special tool needed was an inexpensive corded jigsaw to cut the plywood. The vinyl planks cut easily by scoring with a carpet knife and snapping over the edge of the kitchen counter. The transition from slide to floor was accomplished with "L" shaped stair nose trim glued in place with construction adhesive.

That made quite an improvement to that area and the upkeep now compared to the carpeting is next to nothing ( no vacuum needed). On your edge stair nose how long were those strips

They were 8' sections of plastic, easily cut with a fine-tooth hand saw. Total height is about half the height of the kitchen slide molding.

Angus, it looks like you replaced your dining table top. If so what did you use?

Our house is like Cirque Du Soleil, with cats leaping from table tops to kitchen counters, and they scratched up the original table top. Even the Three Amigos (Chihuahuas) will get up on it. I took it down with a belt sander then used a conventional minwax stain rather than the opaque gel-style stain that Jayco likely used. It was kind of an accidental result but with the texture of the wood grain it turned out OK. Finished it with Minwax Polycrylic water based varnish. The column under the table is a scratching post and the cats now tear that up instead of the table.

Did you just do the top? It looks really nice. DW doesn't like that almost black existing top.

Yeah just the top surface. Unscrewed it from the wall and took it outside. Basic Skill belt sander was $30. Works well but is loud.

Next and last carpet to go is at the base of the couch in in the bedroom couch. We just went to Lowes and for this we will try similar looking peel & Stick planks. Good project for Black Friday. We'll report back...

Angus, I was curious as to how hard was it to remove that strip of carpet that is attached to the floor and is not part of the slide. Did it leave any marks on the flooring?

Joan follows RV Renovations and decorating Groups on social media, so we were fully prepared for it to be a tedious PITA and boy, did it measure up. You have to get mad at it, cut pull and tear then find lots of staples. We pried up most of the staples with a screw driver or grabbed them with good lineman's pliers. Some staples broke and if I could not get purchase on the remaining pin with the pliers, I drove them flush with a nail set. The main rug section was removed by removing baseboards, cutting around the perimeter and then it easily pulls up. Then I measured and cut 1/4 ply as a subfloor and the rest was easy. You will need longer and slightly wider bullnose trim on the floor next to the slide because that section of transition carpet will not be there. I said slightly wider bullnose because there were marks and torn floor vinyl at the very edge of the floor near the wall where the carpet had been. The "L" shaped stair nose that I used for the edging was dumb luck because the 1/4" sub floor raised the planks enough that the stair nose fit like it was custom made for it. It was attached with construction glue. The resulting edge of the slide is half the height of the kitchen slide floor and we easily became accustomed to it.

It looks fabulous!! I’ve wanted to do the same. I’m not quite understanding exactly how you did the transition from slide out to main floor. Any close up pics of that?
Thanks for sharing.

Looks great. We are pretty sure we will be doing the same thing with our North Point in the Spring. I’m interested if you are noticing any visible marks from pulling in extending the slide? We are full timers and are concerned about that even though we only move every 2-3 weeks.

If you don’t mind sharing, what was the tile brand and style you used and did you install it as a floating floor or glued down?

Here are some pics. The stair nose has a peel-off self-adhesive tape under it but that did not work well for this application so I used a tube of SilkaFlex construction adhesive applied with a standard caulking gun. It cuts easily with a fine tooth hand saw and I used a house framer's speed square for the 45 and 90 degree cuts.
