Residential Hook-Up

So I'm new to Rving and had an electrical question. I want the ability to work on my trailer at home, but won't be storing it there. Really I just want to be able to put the slide out and turn some lights on. So my question is should I just use an adapter to convert it to residential, or should I have an electrican come our and install a 50amp panel hook up? My panel is all the way on the rear of my residence so that will probably not be cheap.

Not many electricians will give much advise here, but, IF that is all you will run, get an adapter and go to a typical 15 outlet. You will probably trip the breaker if you try to run a lot. Then you will know that you need to spend some money to get it corrected

If you don't want to run the A/C or refrigerator on shorepower I would probably just use an adapter to get you to a standard 20A plug so you could just plug it in to an outlet in your garage.

Agreed, I used to run my camper by converting the 30Amp plug to a regular plug and connect the camper to an outside outlet. Fridge will run fine (mine does anyway), but running the A/C would probably pop a fuse.

Not sure how handy you are but Lowes sells an RV outlet box you can wire up to your panel and get you the full 30A. I just installed one last weekend, cost me ~$250 including a 30A breaker. The wire was the expensive part (125 feet of 6/3 is $175!).

I was thinking you got ripped off big time! Until I read you had 125 ft wire run. That'll do it!!

I had a 50A installed by an electrician at my house for $150. The main panel is right on the side of my garage way up front, so no wire run required. He ran a small conduit out of my main panel into a new 50A box, wired it up, and off we went (I verified with a VOM before I plugged in). Super easy, and one of my favorite things. Now I can run everything "wide open" in my driveway.

OP, I agree with the others here. Get yourself a good adapter and a good extension cord (if needed) and plug into a 15/20A if you're just running basic stuff (no microwave, and no AC, but should be enough to charge your battery and run some lights). Watch the cord and plugs though, if they heat up, changes are in order.

Do you happen to have a part number handy for that box? I was checking Amazon but did not find one I was fond of.

They literally labeled as an RV Outlet box, but I wasn't able to find that on their web site.

This box is basically the same thing though:

Shop Eaton 30-Amp Overhead or Underground Temporary Power Panel at Lowes.com

Found this one but it's a bit overkill:

Shop Eaton 50-Amp, 30-Amp, 20-Amp Overhead or Underground Temporary Power Panel at Lowes.com

Great discussion! I'm needing the same. If I understand correctly, I need the listed box, a 30 amp breaker for my panel and electrical wiring to get me to the box?

Thats about it, you will need some misc hardware where wire enter boxes. Just get a good measurement on the wire length so the wire can be sized correctly.
