Roadside Assistance for Travel Trailer?

Looking for some recommendations for Roadside Assistance for travel trailer breakdowns such as flats, etc. Really trying to get some input whether AAA offers it. I know Good Sam does, but really trying to stay away from them. As far as AAA, is it a requirement that you have Auto insurance thru them, in order to get coverage? As far as I can tell, it looks like they provide decent service on Auto breakdowns. Thanks for all your help on this matter.

Why do you want to stay away from Good Sam?

I will never use AAA again. I had some break downs years ago when I was traveling and AAA would not pay for the full price of the tow off the interstate. I had to pay for the tow and get reimbursed from them, when I sent in the receipts they would not pay the entire amount because they have agreements in place that they only paid so much for a tow with their towing companies. But they would not tow from the interstate system. May have changed today, this was years ago, but because of that incident I will not use them again.

They don't deliver diesel either, will tow both to
the service center for fuel, go figure!!
I left GS because they only tow to NEAREST service center. Not good.

AAA couldn't provide a tire change just outside of INDY when we had RV-PLUS coverage.

That’s not good. That is the reason I want roadside assistance and maybe for a pull-off to a safe location. On my web searches, everything points to Good Sam. I have towing on my AT&T cell phone for the truck.

Geico's roadside policy wouldn't change tire on my dually and when the tire went on the 5er they wanted to tow it somewhere instead of changing the tire. So I ended up changing both tires myself. Canceled policy when I got home and have since switched to Good Sam...haven't had to use them at this point, so nothing that I can report back.

I had two trips this summer behind a AAA tow truck and no, you do not have to carry their insurance. One was on the interstate, I've never had them turn me down for assistance and they have come to dirt roads and major interstates. They also saved us from a bad night when they found us an available hotel room past midnight when we could not.

All of the different companies have been great for some members and horrible for others. AAA has been great for me. The bonus was the AAA service shops they towed me to treated me great and made solid repairs and more than fair prices. Others here have had horrible experiences with AAA.

If you go AAA you will need RV Plus.

Sounds like there are not any decent roadside service policies, so I guess it’s up to me to change tires.

Eventually it seems everyone has a bad experience with all of the road side services. Being prepared to change your own tire is always a great idea. Even with a flawless service if you don't have cell service and can't reach them, you would have to change your own tire.

As I mentioned in one of the threads you find in the search I cited, I have Good Sam. I have had three situations where I needed them to come out on a blow out. They were there within an hour on all three, changed the tire and I was on my way. I cannot ask for much more than that.

Agree wholeheartedly with these comments. I have AAA and have used them twice with no issues whatsoever.

All the road side services rely pretty much on independent providers around the country, and like any business, there are good ones, and not-so-good ones. We've had AAA for years, and the plan allowed a 5 mile tow. The one time we needed it, we were 7 miles from home, so it cost us. For a few other reasons, we switched to Good Sam, but to date haven't needed to use them, so I can't even say if it's any good or not.

We've had AAA Plus for over 20 years and when we needed it, we had the RV package. When owned our Hybrid, we never needed to change a tire, but we did need them to tow both the HTT and the tow vehicle, both times the tow vehicle had a breakdown. When we had our Greyhawk, we did have a blow out on an outside rear dual just south of Savannah, GA on I-95. It took AAA a little while to find someone, but they did get someone out to us to put our spare on.

We like AAA because it allows us to have our vehicle towed where we want it, not to the nearest approved service station like Coachnet and Good Sam. Even if we go over the 100 mile limit, AAA will still cover the first 100 miles and we pay the additional. With AAA, check what your region offers. If you travel outside your region, it would be good to get acquainted with what services other regions offer. It seems most of the regions along the East Coast offer the same services, but leave the East Coast and you may find different regions don't offer the same services.

Interesting read...we have had AAA for 30+ years because I traveled for the company. When AAA added RV Plus, we automatically upgraded. Then when they had AAA Premium Plus RV.

With regular AAA, we lost a tire & rim on I-70 in the middle of nowhere Utah & sent a service vehicle to pick up the spare & fix the hub. Unfortunately there was very limited cell coverage back then so he wasn't aware that we had a 44 foot 5ver + 1999 F350 Dually Super Duty - yes, we spent the night sleeping on the side of the road. No charge.

With AAA Plus RV we had a blow out on the West Virginia Turnpike & they sent someone out to change it - no charge.

Our 2008 F450 had a breakdown while towing our 2007 Cameo (35 foot). The truck had to be toward from Carrollton, KY to Beechmont Ford (outside of Cincinnati). AAA sent out a big rig tow truck & he towed both to the dealership. And he was amazing to watch back into the lot. Because it was less than $100 there was no charge to us.

We had a blowout on the F450 (dually) and they sent someone out to change the tire - we just had to unhook the truck from the trailer. No charge

One thing we have found out is not all AAA Offices offer the same coverage for the same "plan". We do not have tow coverage through our insurance on the F450.

We had good and bad experience with AAA Plus RV and we are still with them.

Bad - got really low-balled on car and RV totaled by 2.5" hail in Ogallala, Nebraska, Memorial Day, 2019. We replaced the cracked windshield, smashed out quarter panel window, and taillight assembly. We kept our dented car and like the story we can tell when people in NE Colorado ask, "Where'd ya pick up the hail?" Our trailer was easily, though not cheaply, repaired - new glass door, skylight, eternabond in a couple places on roof, will need a new TV antenna if we ever decide we want a TV...

Good - Spring broke in middle of Minnesota farm country. Within 20 minutes AAA had a flat bed out and the driver expertly loaded our trailer. He owned a body shop and parts yard a ten miles away and knew a trailer place 19 miles away where we could buy new springs he could install. Five hours after the spring broke we were on the road with brand new heavy-duty springs on both sides for a shockingly low cost. Will always be thankful for Borntrager Auto and Body in Tremont, MN! They really treated us well!

I have AA Classic RV and have had excellent flat change service from then. Also check you auto insurance carrier and see what they offer. My State Farm policy has road side assistance coverage for my tow vehicle. Happy hunting.
