Rusty leaf springs safe?

Hello all. I'm worried about the safety of these leaf springs, they are pretty corroded looking. The axle has a little rust too. The guy I bought it from was on the ocean. So the salt can eat at stuff.

With hurricane season coming I'm worried if one comes through I may have to pick up and leave. I'm nervous about driving far with these but I'm not sure need your advice. Video attatched through you tube link.

rust on leaf springs

I do not belive that is an issue. Leaf spring are heat treated thick steel, it would take a looong time for rust to compromise them. Your other components would be more likely to fail first. If the rust bothers you there are rust conversion products available, POR 15 is one. Wire brush and apply, it converts rust into a hard coating. I applied a type of rust converter to a 5th wheel frame and axles with a spray gun, turned out nice. Can't remember the brand, been a few years ago!
Here's one, 1 gallon was plenty for a 30' 5th wheel frame and axles-

Fluid Film works really well on axles, springs, etc.

Yes, Fluid film works very good also. I have used it as a corrosion inhibitor / rustproofer on older cars. Only drawback is that it does attract dirt quite well!

Up here in the rust belt, a brand new vehicle will be at least that bad after the first winter. Lol! What you got is nothing. However, like others have posted at some point soon I would have it coated.
I've used this before on trailers and vehicle frames and components.

DO NOT get this on your skin, it does not come off. Itll have to wear off and that can take a couple of weeks.

That's what we used on snowplow/salt trucks too.

You are just fine! That has almost no surface rust at all. That is really heavy thick steel.
Don't come come up to Minnesota! After a few winters our suspensions look WAY worse than that!

Yep. Nothing to see there. One winter here in Michigan will have a brand new vehicle looking far worse than that lol.
