RV antifreeze

Hello all. I did my own winterizing this year, this was my first time, first TT. Was pretty easy. Here's my concern---we live in Fairbanks, AK, so extreme winters are the norm. This winter while pumping fuel into my truck I noticed that the service station had some RV antifreeze sitting near the pumps.......most of them were frozen solid. So as my TT sits locked inside a building at the local fairgrounds I can't help but wonder if my lines have been affected. I ran a ton of antifreeze through the lines, used over 2 gallons. Has anybody ever noticed that the product freezes? I should add that at the time I noticed that the antifreeze had frozen it was only about -20. We saw several -40 and colder days.

It doesn't freeze solid. It turns into slush when the temps get cold. I don't know if it will ever get frozen solid though if it gets cold enough. It should say on the bottle hopefully.

We got temps of about 10 here last month and it just looked like pink slush in the toilet.

I looked up a couple.
The MSDS says 8F for one 20% Propylene Glycol
One that listed propylene Glycol 40% said will not freeze?

So I guess you'll have to see what the % Glycol was in your brand.

Best regards,
Doug

Most RV specific blends are good to -20 to -40. Keep in mind, it will slush below zero but it doesn't expand like water does. Water crystallizes, expands, and does its damage. The anti-freeze will slush but doesn't burst PEX lines. Next year, winterize with the antifreeze then blow the lines with compressed air, this is the method I use.

Water is the only substance that expands when frozen. All the RV antifreeze sold in this area is rated to -50 degrees. You should be fine, in the spring, when you flush, check for leaks. After I install the antifreeze, I use my compressor (low pressure settings) I blow out my lines, of any excess anti freeze. This allows for room just in case the antifreeze was diluted with water. You will be just fine.

RV antifreeze

Thanks much. I have one of the jugs in the shed, I'll check. But when I grabbed the jugs at the gas station each one I attempted to squeeze was frozen solid, there wasn't a bit of give. But they weren't swollen, so I was hoping that it wouldn't swell in the lines either. Well, thanks for the advice and assistance, I'll find out in about a month!

Could it have been that the space above the antifreeze was filled with air and the "squeeze" had no place to go?

I have always used the RV antifreeze and never had any trouble. Pex water line is pretty tough. Check for water leaks when you dewinterize you will be alright.
