RV crash caught on camera in Louisiana

Wasn't quite sure where to post this, so feel free to move the post.

This RV crash happened in my home state of Louisiana on I-10 the other day. Don't know the details yet, but sounds like they had a blow out.

Ouch.

Speed was an issue as well, as they passed the truck going considerably faster.

Yes, the article stated the 18 wheeler who recorded the crash was traveling at 65mph and the RV "blew by" him. The limit may have been 75 on that interstate but it doesn't mean you must drive 75. Others will say if you drive 60, others will rear end you. One just needs to find a happy and safe medium, depending on road conditions and what you are driving. Just my opinion.

You can see part of a tire to the left of the MH at the 13 second mark...maybe his.

I noticed debris being kicked up from the left side before he left the road too. I'm wondering if a blowout occurred on the left front tire. Something catastrophic happened to cause the driver to lose control, possibly even some medical event, like the driver suffering a heart attack.

At the 10 sec. mark there is some tire debris on the right shoulder. I'm always cautious when I see tire debris. Often you'll spot tire failures in groups along the road.

Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

My unscientific hunch, guess, opinion, UN-SWAG is that the debris from one steel-belted tire failure leaves some metal belt shards on/imbedded in the roadway. In any case, when I spot that, I make sure both hands are ON the wheel and my grip a little firmer for a while.

I found a news article that stated:

"ASCENSION PARISH, La. -- A dashboard camera captured a recreational vehicle going off the highway and crashing. The incident shutdown Interstate 10 eastbound Monday.

According to State Police, the motorhome blew out a tire as it was passing the truck, went into the median and hit the cable barriers. After hitting the cable barriers, the motorhome overturned and slid on its side across both eastbound lanes. The driver, a 69-year-old man from Texas, and his passenger suffered minor injuries in the crash."

If there's anything to be thankful for, is that it wasn't the right front tire that blew. That could have caused the motorhome to swerve into the right lane where the truck was.

... as well as thankful it wasn't hit in the east-bound traffic lanes.

I agree with you, I also saw the debris on the left side and sure enough it looks like he blew a tire or 2 ?

Still say he appears to be going too too fast (especially towing).

Just saying.....

Excellent video! My father was a long haul driver all his life, and I have told many people this tip. Most say, well, I know you don't hit the brakes, you just ease off the throttle. They have a hard time believing the proper action is to floor it! It's just physics!

One of the #1 reasons a lot of motorhome owners install an aftermarket system on the front like the Blue Ox Trucenter or Safe-T-Plus stabilizers. Not saying it would prevent it, but in most cases they'll help you maintain control in a blowout. I-10 has claimed a ton of RV's. Having owned a few motorhomes ourselves, it scares me to death watching that. Just shows how quick stuff can go wrong. I'm glad they were ok. I'm sure that was a life changing event for them, and they'll be extremely cautious if they get into another one. We always see it, but don't think about it happening to us.

Another thing I just thought of; I'm guessing it was only 2 of them, and they were buckled. How many people do you know that travel with kids in the back on bunks, in the dinette or on the sofa, not buckled? We made it a point in our motorhomes to have the kids in their car seats, buckled in and car seats secured. Although most have the dinette or couch in a slide, it's better to do something than nothing at all. It at least made us feel a little better. Had that motorhome had kids or others in the back, the story might be a little different. For those that have kids, grandkids or other passengers, please consider safety over comfort.

There definitely was a previous blowout/retread failure. Debris on both sides. My in laws have a MH. She always keeps it at or just under the speed limit. Grandkids strapped in. They complain, but no belty, no ridey.

This is EXACTLY what I thought when I watched the video. My kids are usually buckled in somewhere, either the couch or dinette area. There is some protection up front in the drivers cab, but in the back, you are exposed to everything flying. Horrifying, horrifying thought.
