Lower Pottsgrove >> A 74-year-old Sanatoga couple watched Monday as firefighters put out a blaze that destroyed their beloved camper parked in their front driveway.
Crews from Sanatoga and Ringing Hill fire companies arrived on the scene at around 12:44 p.m. and worked for about 30 minutes to put out the flames, which Lower Pottsgrove Fire Marshal Lew Babel said started in the kitchen of the camper.
“The refrigerator is supplied by electric, gas and battery. Any one of those three things could have failed, we don’t know yet,” Babel said.

John and Dawn Kelius, both 74, watched from their driveway at 1587 Rupert Road as the firefighters worked on the camper. John Kelius said they had just returned about 10 days ago from a trip that took them to Fairfield, VA.
Four years ago, the camper had carried the couple all the way to Alaska and back.
“There’s no other way to travel. Once you travel like this you don’t want to do it any other way,” John Kelius said of his camper.
The vehicle, which they have owned for eight years, is worth more than $40,000, he said. The fire wiped out the back of the camper and destroyed much of the inside. Kelius said he doesn’t know if he’ll get another one.
Fortunately, the camper was parked far enough away from the home to keep the blaze contained.
“Another 10 feet back and we would have had a problem,” Babel said.
The Kelius’ were grateful for the firefighters who came out to their home on a steamy Monday afternoon.
“You know what amazes me,” John Kelius said, “is that these are all working men and they had time to come out and put out my fire.”
