RV security and theft poll

I am posting this poll on behalf and at the request of fellow member travelingjw.

"Over the weekend I reviewed 40 pages of Mods and security was a recurring issue. I wonder how much is fear generated or how much is a result of knowledge from a friend or direct experience. Feel free to participate in the poll, it will be up for a month.
These questions pertain only to when you are "on the road or at a campsite etc."

MULTIPLE CHOICE, CHECK All THAT APPLY

In the 44 yrs we RV'd we never had anything taken from the camper, campsite or tow vehicle. We hit all the lower 48 and all of the Southern Canadian Provinces and every type of campground or RV park you can think of, spending anywhere from 1 day to 4 months.

We've never had anything stolen when camping, on the road or campground. I did have my vehicle broke into at my condo in Florida in a gated community. My nephew we camp with 3 or 4 times a year had all his beer stole from his cooler a couple years ago at the campground.

I'm hoping the final choice dominates the poll.

Only thing I've ever had taken was 1 wheel chalk taken from bed of TV while we were staying 1 night at a campground in MS. Couldn't tell you why they didn't take the 2nd one laying right next to the other one??

Someone stole the battery from my prior RV while it was parked in my driveway. Since then I added a locking mechanism to the battery box. In addition I've added some outside cameras that are motion activated and send me an alert if anyone approaches the RV.

We were hoping it was an option after reviewing all the others. If we think it was taken it was later found.

This past year we have 'found' many things, and even had two young girls leave us a fine note and their rubber pet "Spike" at our campsite before leaving. They and their friends had tried to spook me with it when exiting the campground restroom.

We think they were the same young girls who were spooked by our friend Sammy we had found years earlier at a vacant campsite. We've even had camp hosts spooked by Sammy. We place him just behind the front tire of the MH. lol!
Maybe it's his real tail we added a few years ago.

We lived in California... all of the "it happened to me check marks" happened there... Almost all of the I do this now check marks are because we lived in California.

I think the majority of campers have a neighborhood watch type of attitude when camping with other strangers. Having said that, I get concerned if we camp in an area for an extended time when we are the only ones in the campground. Folks drive through once in awhile just for a look see, but over time there might be the one who sees an opportunity to be exploited when the campers leave for awhile, especially in remote areas. Precautions are always a good thing.

I use a king pin lock mainly to keep from getting grease on me We bought our camper used and owner had lost the keys, he hadn't had locked it for over a year with no issues. Not sure locking my storage doors at a campground would work since they have the 751 key. Side note, we only seen "family issues" at one big amusement park campground we frequent. Normally everyone is just trying to have fun.

WoW... Now that there are 50 responses... i am glad to hear that I am the only one who has been a victim... maybe moving away from crime ridden Anaheim was a smarter idea than we thought. We have not had issues since... a few RV's ago.

When in a campground/RV park I rarely lock my trailer or car. Have left my phone charging on the front seat of the car all day one time with the Windows and sunroof open (by mistake) and everything was there when I got back. I have camped for 50 years and never had a problem, except for food stolen by chipmunks and squirrels!

Another point to touch on is where these things happen. In my case, my rig is either in a campground or in my back yard. I have never had a problem.

Many instances that I hear about are in locked storage yards.

Maybe if you have had a problem, it would be informative to say where it happened. This is a result of years ago hearing of creeps who would pull your kingpin latch for kicks in rest areas. Even though it never happened to me or anyone I know, It made me aware enough to change my actions to include precautions.

One thing I have developed is a good habit of checking the latches and pins around my hitch and my bikes and kayak straps every time I stop at a rest area.

Only incident we've had was a propane tank that apparently sprouted legs overnight and walked off. It was a small, 1 gallon, tank that we use for our grill. They did, fortunately, leave the grill. It was Myrtle Beach, so....

Our Eagle was broken into and they took the TV only. This happened while in storage. All the campers in the storage facility were broken into that night. This was about 5 years ago and I have since changed facilities.

X2 on that.
Part of my "every time we set off" routine, even after a 10 minute rest stop, is a "front end check"... I give the hitch a good shake, check that the locking pins (coupler latch and hitch pin) are still there, rattle the safety chains, make sure the breakaway cable hasn't snagged, and make sure the tongue jack is still all the way up.
This comes right after I count the wheels, etc.

Paranoia can sometimes be your best friend :-)

My MH was broken into back in 1992. It was parked behind a friends parts store, next to a McDonald's, and a state run half way house. The guy had to be skinny, because he went in through a roof vent! Stole binoculars, my "Happy Camper" hat, and ate all my suckers. (I really miss that hat!) I was lucky, because they broke into three other units next to mine, and thoroughly trashed them. They only slept in mine (and used the toilet). No problems, now that our TT lives next to our house. Isolated incident, since we're on our sixth camper, and have had no other problems parked, or at a campground, with 29 years of fun under our belts.
