RVing With Dog

After years of saying we'd never have another dog (never say never....), we just adopted a rescue pup. 6-month-old hound mix, "Jax" (like the old New Orleans beer, of course!). Currently in process of potty training, and will be taking him along our RV trips - first one will be a short trip this coming week when we have our two grandsons.

We're thinking we need a portable fence/pen to set up at campsites, and there are plenty of choices out there. Anyone have a particular model/size to recommend? Or is a cable run a better solution? Jax is currently about 26 pounds, and we believe he will max out around 35-40 pounds.

We carry 2 sections of folding wire dog fencing. One has a gate and we can connect them together for a large pen. Some CG's won't let us put them out but only a few.

Ours are 36" high and our dogs have never tried to jump out. A larger breed may need a taller one.

I hate retractable leashes. Not enough control over the dog.

BUT!

We found they are great for leashing in camp! Attach the retractable up high on the awning and attach a regular leash so there is slack (not pulling up constantly). The dog can wander around the camp without tieing up camp chairs and tripping people.

We have a 15 foot (???) long plastic coated tie-out cable and a piece of 5-6 foot piece of rope, with loops tied in ends. We loop the rope around a sturdy object such as the bumper, frame member, tree, picnic table, etc. Then clip the lead to it. The rope has not caused any damage to anything yet.

Thanks for all the input, folks. This week will be our first outing with Jax - and two grandkids... (Gluttons for punishment, we are!) We'll see how the cable secured to the coach works out.

Like norty we had the folding metal fencing. Previously we used plastic fencing but I decided it took up too much storage so we switched to the metal. We had either 3 or 4 sections and it made an enclosure big enough for 4 people to sit in with the dog(s). We had to put our beloved Cookie down last year and we haven’t gotten another one. Sometimes our g’son’s Milty travels with us.
