I had the safety brake cable pull out on my old wild cat 5th wheel in a campground while making a tight turn. It wasn't because it was too short but because I stored stuff between the hitch and the tailgate. That taught me a valuable lesson, don't store stuff that can get in the way of the cable. Yes I always connect my safety brake cable.

I'd like to see some statistics and documented actual cases of runaway trailers causing mayhem.

I loosely threaded the cable up through about every 6th link on my safety chains so that it could be easily pulled. Won't activate on tight turns and it's easy to remember to hook it up.

So is it really run away, you connect the safety chains right? So it is somewhat still connected to your tow vehicle right? This happened to a friend of mine hauling a smaller version of a zamboni and it sent him on a wild ride into the ditch with the trailer chasing him.

According to this report and others, it's more common than you would think...

I saw a trailer come loose from a vehicle on a busy road a good many years back. It is blind luck that it went in a ditch and disintegrated the load of furniture.

Any one who thinks that the breakaway switch should not be used is dangerous and hopefully very rich.

Common or uncommon, I want to do my part to not be involved. Of course, accidents can still happen.

I have not checked mine but I would want it to activate if the trailer came off the ball but was still on the safety chains. This would mean that the length of the cable is important. The way I hook mine is with a D link to the same place as the safety chains. But I think my cable is long enough to allow me to drag the trailer on safety chains without it pulling the switch, but I am not sure.

I don't know. I think it's more geared towards "dangerous homemade trailers." Seems the website is wanting more government intervention into our lives via hitch regulations/standards. I would think that the subject should already be covered by your states motor vehicle laws.

When I first saw this site I thought the guy was some sort of anti-trailer crackpot. After reading through his story and looking at the stuff he's pointing out, I've come to the conclusion that he's for real. He's not going after people like us who actually care about how we tow. It's the folks with the home made trailers and anything that isn't being properly set up. You all know what I'm talking about, you've all seen in it in your travels.

As far as web site skills, it probably could be nicer looking and more organized, but the message he's delivering is clear.
