SC motorhome property tax.?

We are stepping up to a class a motorhome.
I know that the sales tax is limited to $500, but what about personal property tax? It looks to me that a motorhome is taxed as a residence, not as a vehicle. Can anyone in SC point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Registering Your RV | SCRVDA

For an RV you can drive in GA it is insured like a residence; different policy than cars. The registration is same as a car though. Pay your property tax when you buy the vehicle and then its just $20/yr after that. When its a trailer, you have to pay tax on it every year.

Just filled out our property tax form in NC. The trailer is taxed as personal property, just like a boat .

I live in Greenville. SC taxes motorhomes like a vehicle, personal property tax. There is a form you can fill out at the tax office to have it taxed at a lower rate (as a second home) assuming it has a kitchen and a bathroom. I believe motor homes may be billed automatically at the lower rate, but for travel trailers it has to be requested every year. This is our first year as motorhome owners and I was pleasantly surprised at the cost. Not that it was cheap, but we own a boat and it was much lower than that. Your county tax office can answer most of your questions, possibly online, depending on your county's website. Greenville's is pretty helpful.

In Virginia, motorhomes are taxed as personal property at the same rate as private vehicles. However, due to a tax break law several years ago, private cars and trucks are given a tax deduction of around 40% on the first $20,000 of the value on each vehicle. HOwever, that does not apply to trailers and motorhomes. I will pay more on my motorhome (2014 Precept 31UL than I will on my 4,600 square foot home on 6.4 acres.

I'm in Charleston and just like DazednConfuzed, we pay the lower assessment because the rv is considered a 2nd home because it has a kitchen and bathroom. However I believe you can only qualify for the lower assessment on 1 property. So if you truly have a vacation home, you will pay the regular property tax on the rv. I took my bill to the county tax office. As soon as I told them I needed a reassessment on an rv, the staff knew exactly why I was there and took care of me. My bill on my 2021 Eagle HT 27RS went from around $1200.00 down to less than $700.00 just to give you an idea of the discount. You should only need to do this on your initial tax bill.

Thanks everyone for the info. I'm relieved that the new MH isn't taxed as a vehicle, but at a much lower residence rate.

We're new to the motorhome world, take delivery this Friday and don't know what we don't know right now.

Even though we've done a ton of research, looking for the right rv for us it's a big move from a 24ft TT to a 35ftMH.

Can't wait to bring her home!!
