Second outing

We had our second outing this weekend in the RV. Towing was a much smoother experience after adding an extra chain link to the WD bars. Backing in was much faster as well since I'm learning to back in better and my wife and I are communicating better.

The only downside of the trip was when our dog--his first trip in the RV--decided to pull a superman off the top step of the RV and landed hard on the pavement. He came up lame and refused to use his left rear leg. We took him to a local vet who diagnosed him with a torn ACL. he goes to his vet tomorrow to get surgery scheduled.

This will prove to be a very expensive trip. Other than the dog incident, it was a good trip.

Ouch, ours got sick from something in the grass in a CG. I think it was a rotten hot dog someone dropped.
Cost over $500 for a night in the vet hospital.

When our dog tore her ACL we opted for an alternative treatment. Shots called adequan. She had to get weekly, than bi-weekly, than monthly shots. Every shot cost $50. I think everything cost us $500. We had to limit her activity and she healed pretty nicely. Took about 6 months. This was about 2yrs ago. She is a large dog and now 10yrs old. She runs and plays like she is much younger. I am glad we tried the shots before surgery and I am glad the vet suggested it.

Was this a full tear or partial tear?

Second outing

He's going in for surgery in Thursday. Surgery will be between $1200 and $1900 plus today's visit, $600.

Not great, but we know that it could've been a lot worse.

Definitely the most expensive camping trip we've ever had.

His prognosis is really good, according to the doc. He expects him to make a full recovery. Which is good, because, even though he's 11, he still plays and acts like a 2-year-old.

The x-rays were inconclusive. It wasn't her first time tearing it so there was some previous scar tissue.

That is really reasonable price for surgery. I am glad the prognosis is good.

Money well spent to make a family member well. Keep us posted on his post-surgery recovery.

For those of you wondering, our dog made it through the ACL surgery quite well. He is healing slowly and has only just been given the doctor's permission to start walking. We have been carrying him everywhere.

Prior to surgery, he was given a pain patch which consisted of fentanyl delivered transdermally through the patch. The patch made him loopy beyond belief. He whined and whimpered for 3 days straight--not even a break to sleep. He literally went 3 days with no sleep. The patch made him dysphoria and he wound up taking a serious swipe at his left eye in his stoned stupor. In doing this, he took off a significant chunk of his cornea. After waiting a week to let it heal, a specialist recommended that we have the eye removed. The concern was that there was no way to save his vision in that eye and there was significant risk that the eye could literally explode at any point if he bumped it on something.

He had the eye removed on Thursday. He's recovering really well. Was even playing with his toys Thursday night after surgery. Now we just have to help him regain the strength in the leg with the repaired ACL.

Poor dog! Hope he continues to heal.

We had a similar experience while camping. She tried to jump from the back of the booth to the bed, fell and broke her femur. Emergency vet and surgery with plate and screws. Eight weeks of no activity has nearly driven us all crazy! Had to cancel two planned camping trips. Her final x-rays are Thursday. We made it and she is using the leg as normal.
